  • diffrent ways to use herbs

    Infusions:
This is like making tea or coffee, you place the herb in a tea infuser , place the infuser in your cup, pour fresh boiled water in cup, cover cup for 5 to 10 minutes then remove infuser, drink your tea as is or add honey or lemon or cinnamon to help mask the taste of bitter tasting teas.

    Decoctions:
This is for roots, bark, berries. You place your herbs into a sauce pan, add enough water to just cover the herbs, bring to a hard boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer 20 to 30 minutes. Strain the liquid thru a coffee filter or strainer into a pitcher. Use the amount you need place the rest in a cool place will last about 48 in a cool place .

I will add more tomorrow . There is still tinctures, ointments and creams.
I have at one time or another made all of the above. And the creams and ointments are a pain.

Some of the health food stores have them. And places like garden ridge and hobby lobby sometimes have them.. dark blue bottles will also work as far as I was told.

Another option is your local pharmacy, never tried but I bet they would sell you a couple.

                  Tinctures :
SAFTY WARNING: TINCTURES ARE MADE WITH ALCOHOL. VODKA OR RUM DO NOT USE INDUSTRIAL, ISOPROPYL, METHYLATED ALCOHOL. DO NOT USE TINCTURES WHILE PREGNANT OR NURSING.
A usual tincture ratio is 1 part herb 5 parts alcohol.

To prepair. Place herbs in a glass jar pour alcohol untilled herb is covered, seal jar and label.. let set 10 to 14 days shake jar at least every other day.
After I has set up the time needed, place a muslin or nylon mesh bag inside a tall pitcher or if you have one a wine press. If your like me and don't have one you have to wring the bag with your hands to get all the liquid out of the herbs. I suggest wearing rubber gloves for several reasons, sanitation being #1. After you think you
have them drained I usually throw out the left over herbs. Then pour your tincture into dark bottles and it will last up to two years.
