The inner layer of the pine tree bark is edible. It must be cooked either in a pan or hot rock for the body to digest it. I have only eaten this once. It wasn't my favorite, but could help keep somebody alive in an emergency. The picture below is before it was cooked. I ran out of memory, so I do not have a picture of it cooked.
It has a load of carbs and tastes kinda like dehydrated chicken when it is cooked. Adirondack means Bark Eaters....
So even pine bark tastes like chicken? Who knew! :) IS there any key to cooking, or anyway to make it taste better, I like chicken, but just incase? We have tons of pine trees around these parts. Good info for me to have.. Thanks
You can also suppliment you Vitamin C by boiling green pine needles. Pine needle tea.

I've made that in Venture crew, it's pretty gross.... Also, the inner bark, if you take the white and orangeish bark right before you hit the inner bark you can suck on that for water, it takes like oranges, but you cannot swallow it, well you aren't supposed to.
My Peterson Field Guide says all are edible. (And that some are better than others.)
But it does list the cambium as a source to make flour, not just to eat, so it may be nasty.
Also, Pink,
the light younger needles are better tasting in tea than the dark green mature ones. I have only had it a couple times but it didn't seem bad to me.
