  • Catfish Fishing

I went out fishing today for about 4 hours and didn't catch a thing!
I wanted to catch some catfish, so I got this catfish dip bait.
    No luck with that.

I was looking on youtube and seen some ok looking catfish dough bait recipes.
Anyone here want to share one of your own if you have one?

This was my location on the Fox River

Have you tried chicken livers? I've never catfished, but have been told it worked well, so it's from word of mouth not based on experience.

    I love cajun style catfish!!!!!!

I heard nothing is better than chicken liver.
      Never used it though.

I hoped I wasn't losing my mind on that one. If you try it let me know how it works.

I use chicken livers all the time when I fish for catfish. They work great! Sometimes I'll use night crawler but the livers work best for me.

The old man uses chicken liver, we also will set out chicken and let it get all stinky and nasty.. he uses, oh, whats it called, chad? too...also cutting open a can of alpo, and "baiting" the fish works too. We live right on the river and he does a lot of catfishing.. he took our 3 yr old out last night for her first time. He had a.. hell, Im not familiar with all the terms, but a trot line (? is that it) out last night, had a few on it this morning.. This time of year, with the water just right, it leaves a nice sandy bank for him.. Feet in the sand, beer in hand, but the old lady is close enough to beckon him for dinner! lol.. :) Good luck!! Ill post more if I hear anything!

I stand corrected, its SHAD, cut up shad, or creek chubs, leave em out in the sun to get some stink on em, and for extra potency, put vanilla extract on them, catfish seem to love them.. The husband just read a recipe where an old man would cut up shad and creek cubs in mason jars, with garlic vanilla extract, and bury them in his yard..for up to a few months, never marked where he buried them, cause the grass would never grow up over top of them.. (Old issue of Fur Fish and Game) Geeze, I wouldnt want to open that crap up... shewwwweeee.

I used to use dip bait and dough, but I stopped. I like livers, but they are messy. Tainted gizzards work well and stay on the hook well. Cut up cheap hot dogs work very well- better than I would have believed. Nightcrawlers work, but seem to catch smaller cats. For big catfish, I like large live minnows fished on bottom- something like big shiners or creek chub.

Chicken gizzards work pretty good around here. Lots of people use livers, but they are too much trouble to get on and keep on the hook. Have had a lot of success with night crawlers too. Caught 2 that weighed about 3 1/2 - 4 lbs each on a 6 inch electric grape plastic worm while fishing a bass tournament on Percy Priest earlier this year.

we used to run alot of lines smeared with Cat Fish charlie. then do some casting down river from our lines. usually using gizards and worms.

on the trinity when I was a teen, you could dang near catch a catfish just by dropping a hook and yanking it out. not so much these days.

There's a fellow down the road from us that catches them and brings them home....he has a 2000 gallon concrete tank fed by a spring....that he tosses them into.

Keeps them there for a few days....feeds them corn and rice.....the meat is awesome....he's showed me the difference.

The fresh catch vs the tank fish....tank fish is pure white meat....where the fresh catch was slightly gray....both were delicious....tank fish wasn't quite as "fishy".

Yes, the white meat is the best.
Cut off any dark meat on the fish.

Also, I guess the smaller ones are better tasting, due to less time spent eating toxic crap in the rivers.

As far as the best catfish bait goes, I like to cut up chicken livers toss then in a bag of kool aid powder until they are coated good then take a piece of panty hose or netting and tie that around the liver so it doesn't fall apart. Works great, and it doesn't fall apart like liver normally does.
