Sourdough just out of curiosity, what pack in your experience do you find to be the most comfortable with the heavy weight out?I just got a mystery ranch marshall.

Well......I have been retired for at least ten years, but for many decades the Barney's External frame and one of the optional bags was the standard for guides and the packers we hired.

I do read that some are using the Mystery Ranch (I don't know which model). I think some are using Stone Glacier pack also. I got one of the Alaska Range (Sheep Hunter) packs, which I like, but they went out of business.

No you are correct. I was just considering the pack in not out. I've not had the discomfortable pleasure of packing out a moose quarter. (Yet)

I have found the heaviest thing is food . At around 2 lbs a day for 3400 calories diet. It adds up quick

We may be thinking of different concepts of backpack hunting. The heaviest thing for the way we do this is the Moose or Caribou or Sheep or Mt. Goat that needs packing out. And a big Brown Bear hide with the skull still in is 160 pounds to pack out. Moose you can generally get field butchered to six or eight loads of about 70+ pounds.

Absolutely agree. I have been slowly upgrading my equipment. The whole buy once cry once is true in this adventure.

The best way to "hate" this type of hunting is to purchase cheap low quality gear.

I am a retired Alaska Hunting Guide, 39 years. That is how "most" hunts are done in Alaska. In addition, 52 years of personal "subsistence" hunting with backpack. That said, my advice would be wasted, because we use equipment that members would poop hearing the cost of. So, it is just not relevant. People are not going to purchase a $675.00 to $800.00 backpack, or a $1,600.00 tent. We are in the field four to five months living out of the pack. But we do get resupplied every 10 to 14 days, when your hunter departs, and another arrives on the same bush plane. Actually, the stoves would be the same.

Looking to open the discussion on backpack hunting. I belive we could learn some lessons within the crowd. Looking for pack ideas , gear list. Etc
