Knaping is the process of flaking off small pieces of the material to accomplish a shape.

The selection of the piece of flint to be used is important...one must look at the grain of the flint to determine wetheer the desired shape can be made from it.

then using a fe primitive tools....and a leather hand guard....you begin to shape.

a rock for striking large pieces off...then finer things like antler tips and I've seen small copper rods used modern day.....to do shaping and sharpening.

    volcanic glass...obsidian (spell?)....can flake to 1 molecule....insanely sharp.

If you found the glass like substance it might be discard from a glass factory i find glass discards of all type color and quality in rivers I'll post some pictures when I get the time, I've been thinking about trying some knapping projects, the rivers around here are just loaded with flint, discard glass and other usable materials

I definately need to try this! To find flint around here is just about impossible. I just found that out the other day. I think you will have to send a shipment up to me and I'll send some chaga down to you.

@Echo I don't think it is obsidian, it didn't flake sharp or in slabs.

the top one looks like obsidian...volcanic glass....flakes very sharp....down to the molecular edge....surgeons at one time were using it for scaples...but it was too sharp...they could not feel the cut.

I got a few pieces a friend got me for my Bday....years ago....havent attempted anything yet.

The only two knapping projects I've ever done that look like something. And didn't break. One is some type of glass no idea what from. The other is a stone found in a river bed by my house
