Interest in a 2016 Meet Up

I've been thinking over this idea of something after reading about interest in a prepper fair down south. I wanted to see if there'd be any interest in it from folks in my region, be it PA or other areas like NY, MD, WV etc from where people would be willing to drive in from. My idea would be to set up a meet for sometime next year if there is interest. Just an informal prepper/ survival meet and greet weekend sometime in 2016, likely somewhere in central PA, most likely at a state park or similar.

I'm envisioning a family friendly affair to get people together to meet face to face and for people to have fun in the outdoors. Idea would be to have it at a site with both tent and trailer camping site available yet hopefully close enough to hotel/ motels for those new to things who might not have gear or for those who might not be looking to "rough it".

Aim would be to get to know one another and network real time, do some things like skill developments and fun skill challenges. Maybe even with some small prizes if we could raise some funds or get some donations. Maybe do some skill workshops to cover skills for newbies, kids or those that might just be rusty. Then have some sort of challenge to test what they just learned individual and random teams. Like say fire starting races, knot and lashing challenges, plant identification, cooking competition, etc...just a few of the types of topics I was thinking. This would be similar events testing outdoor skills and knowledge I recall doing as a boy in Scouts. Maybe some short hikes to cover basics of hiking along with function stacking in things like identifying plants and trees. Maybe demonstrate or discuss skills like water purification, trapping/ snarring, etc... you get the general idea. Maybe survey those interested and see what topics they'd be interested in. Maybe even try to find some vendor types, say a knife maker willing to show their skills and process and also allow them to have products available or to be able to connect with this group as possible future customers.

Nothing to fancy or overly complex or schedule heavy. Would want to allow lots of time to network and allow spending time together with each others families.

Might be a pipe dream or not get people to show. One thing for people to say yes, another for them to actually show. Might prove to much to try to put together but thought I'd start to test the waters.

      CountryGuy,

I'd be interested. Be nice to put faces with names. Might want to start a thread under news and events for this so everyone outside of PA gets it. I' probably go to the one in FL too.

Probably can't do July. Headed to Alaska.....finally.

Would love to do something like this but will not be able to attend with hubby's health issues. I could use some hands on training on somethings that are easier to learn that way. Watching U tube does not always work like hands on skills. I think our days are numbered for the type of prepping we can do. All the heavy type of things that hubby used to do, he can't do anymore and neither can I. My son in law hurt his back and that has not helped things either. Hope his back heals soon or I may be buying fire wood soon.

OK, time to bump this and put out a role call for everyone in PA. Again, PA only unless you live elsewhere but have a camp or BOL here or visit often.

Still in central PA in Union county. Originally from western PA over in Jefferson County, think Feb 2nd. Like to see how many folks are still here after the server website issues earlier this year. Chime in and let everyone know what you're up to.

I'm curious, anyone planning to go to the Mother Earth News Fair over in Seven Springs, PA on Sept 17th? I'm thinking about going as Joel Salitin is one of the speakers as is Howard Garrett (aka the Dirt Doctor). Might be cool to have a little side meet & greet there with any of our members here that are attending.

We still haven't had that gathering yet.

No seems like there are only about 8-12 of us around here and active anyway and we're all scattered about the country.

I see new people keep popping on, are here a day or 2 and then never log back in... Sure when they read some of the posts with all the pissing matches going on it sends them running elsewhere.

Thought to the moderators and Diesel, what about send out a mass email to all subscribed members. Just a little hey we're back up and going and eager for all to contribute. A reminder might bring some people back and jump start activity and conversations so people have things to discuss other than each other?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I agree. It would be nice to see new members participate. Seems like a lot of people sign in as new, and never post again. It is disappointing. I'm sure they have a lot to share. What can we do to encourage people to participate?

Well we could all individually look at the most recent members that joined and posted in the intro thread and then PM them and welcome them and give a personalized invite to join in and stop by weekly if not daily. Ask them what interests they have or questions. try to start a conversation. I believe that will then send them an email to the address they used to register their profile and maybe we get some stopping back. sort of the 80/20 rule. if we reach out to say 10, we might get 2 to respond and engage, that's more than we had.

I'm willing to try. Maybe someone could ramrod it and divide the names up so were not all sending to the same individuals?
