We'd be interesting in coming to something like that. We pretty much take our kids everywhere with us, so no kids could be an issue. I understand your concerns, but imo kids shouldn't be running around getting into people's stuff, messing with equipment, or at a fire unsupervised by a parent - just common sense stuff. I know not everyone has that, but they're gonna be a liability with or without kids, aren't they?

I'd be willing to come and bring a couple of like minded friends.
I like the idea of bring your own food and feed yourself since this a survival forum. just my 2 cents.
I also agree that if you can move it to October that would be a lot better because Labor Day weekend is still middle summer heat here in Mid TN.

Great idea ! And thats my birthday weekend !,,,,, as far as the firearm vs family problem,,,Talk to your local gun club , and NRA, they will know about regs and insurance, make Whole campsite (SAFE PLACE)and separate range for an (on site range) , or make open trips to an (off site range) . Your local gun club would love that anyway , and bring locals $ just a thought...

IMO I think if we ban kids then we are not really teaching survival. My son has been to many outdoor events and he knows better than to go where he don't belong. I have read many accounts where kids get lost, or even have to fend for a parent in a survival situation and they need the knowledge as much as the adults. I we can't bring kids we are just having a big party in the woods and we know what dumb ass drunk adults become, IDIOTS WITH NO REGARD FOR OTHER PEOPLES STUFF OR SAFETY! If you are going to ban anything ban alchol, after all we are trying to learn how to survive not revisiting our college yers. I will not attend without my son, and only irresponible adults would want ti that way! Oh, the two times I have been robbed it was by adults not children, one met my .45 and was arrested the other met my Benelli m2 and was arrested. So there is some food for thought!

If I could make a suggestion...we have a large family reunion every few years with over 300 people...I would first look in the area where you are suggesting and find a couple of places that would be available and suite your needs...you might see what the possibility of renting something like a 4-h camp for the week that has camping spots or small cabins and a lodge and a kitchen then compare it with a private or public camp ground. I would suggest who ever is organizing from the response you get here going with that number in mind when planning. An example would be if you are planning for 100 and you are paying 1000 a night for the campground.., that is 10 bucks a person but only plan on 75 showing up so you need to charge 13.50 a person to make sure your expenses are covered. Same with your food if you are planning on cooking....and you would need to look at all you expenses the same way permits etc and plan for the cost for 100 but dividing it between 75 people. We never go anywhere unless it is lets go type thing...but it sure sounds like fun. I know this year would be out for us and next year I will not go to far from home at all.Last edited by survivalcookie; 04-26-2011, 05:29 PM.

I would love to see a big convention type event, but thats not always feasible for people to make it to, because of cost and work schedules. This is what I would love to one day see. Getting people in all different areas that hold a lot of knowedge on a range of survival areas to be a "leader" or head the group. Having them meet once a month, or a summer series, for smaller, local groups. Depending on the number of experienced leaders, you could have a 200-400 mile radius. Other people could have input, ideas, scenerios pondered, and individuals could have their needs assessed and pointers for newbies (like me) given. Groups that meet could always have what went on posted, so other groups could see. We are short on cash and a convention that is any further than a few hundred miles wouldn't be possible for us. Just an idea. Tell me what you think! This kitten has claws......

Hey all, I'm new here and have gone through this thread and wondered if anyone had considered starting this on a more local level in the "gunshow" format. Start small at local convention centers and let vendors and attendees cover the cost of space rental. Once that is built up a bit then you could start having the larger regional type conventions and attract many more vendors and increase competition that could certainly benefit the consumer attending. Of course this type of venue would likely exclude many hands on type survival training sessions like fire starting and firearms activities.
As far as firearms, kids, and unresponsible adults at an outdoor type event go.... I don't believe there is any way to completely eliminate that liability without excluding any or all of those and possibly eliminating and alienating others, in doing so, who would otherwise benefit from the event. I believe the liability could be mitigated to a great degree by assigning volunteer field marshals to police the activities and general goings on within the boundaries of the event. Including the aforementioned, and managing the liability, would allow everyone the opportunity to learn and enjoy the experience. I would be willing to wager that there are firearms manufacturer's that would love to set up shop and offer shooting safety courses, utilizing their products to teach those interested in learning, in a safe and controlled manner.
You might give consideration to approaching and partering with organizations like The Boy Scouts of America. It could prove to be a beneficial venture for both parties and I know those type of organizations usually have land that is set up for the type of event we are discussing. It may be worth talking with military officials at local military bases. They might be willing and able to accomodate an event of this nature.
Either way, I think it's a great idea and I would certainly attend any event I could afford to, in any state. In fact, there are several states I haven't even been to yet and it would be a great excuse for me to visit. :-)
I'll be watching to see what develops.

FAR too hard to do local events, and to manage what is said or done there. We can't have people randomly doing events in locations and slapping our name on it and doing what ever with or without sfatey precautions, disclaimers, or even knowing who they are what they background or level of education on the topics are etc
Right now it's not looking good for this event for 2011, not enough support and too much complaining ;)WHAT IF THE AMERICA YOU KNEW, WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE?
The best thing you can do to support the site is pass it on to your friends and fav sites like other forums, facebook, twitter etc. Let people know about us! :)

I would hate to see you throw in the towel for 2011 already. Of course I also understand that I am brand new here and may not be getting the whole picture. For the record though, if there is any way I can help, let me know.

Supported here! I live in MidTN, are there any areas that you are looking at in particular? I know of several nice camping areas. Let whoever comes, come. Let the complainers and nay-sayers stay at home! Nothing will ever please everyone. This kitten has claws......
