I have been in the KY Army National Guard, since 1990, with a 8 year break in service, I am still in, and have 4 years left on current enlistment.
I have been a 15T20FQ2, (originally 67 series) Tactical Helicopter Repairer. That is a Blackhawk Helicopter Mechanic (15T) section leader (20), and my secondary skill set is helicopter crew chief (F identifier) and now I can add the Q2 identifier as well, which is ALSE Technician, which qualifies me to inspect, repair, and maintain all of our flight equipment, survival gear, helmets, radios, flight clothing, etc. I have some BOB pics I need to post, lol! ;)
I have deployed all over the world with the Army. We were the first state to get the UH60 in the early 80's and National Guard Bureau used to let us do what was called a "KEEPUP" tour with the active component, I have deployed with the SOAR (aka 160th or the "Night Stalkers") to Central and South America while the little dance in Somalia was going on in the early 90's, and I have been to Iraq with 4-101 in 05-06.
All of that time I was in an assault helo unit, I have now (as of 2 years ago now) moved over to a medevac unit, and get to practice some medical skills as well, starting IV's etc, to maintain combat lifesaver certification (not combat medic, thank goodness!), normally you just have to do one stick a year to maintain it. We are doing it every month at drill. The medical skills are definitely ones that you have to practice over and over to maintain.
Plus the state likes to send us through a 3 week CQB course before we deploy over seas, which are some other skills we don't get to practice too much.
