      Fire Fighter/Rescue

I once was Cert. Fire Fighter In South Carolina also a member of The Winyah Rescue squad(Land, Sea rescue not medical rescue). Must say I miss both but had to have job that would pay the bills unfortunately FF/Rescue didn't do it. I now work with quite a few different alphabet agencies, and it pays all the bills quite well.

I don't *do* trauma, never have.
But I have come across more than a few drunks
stumbling from their cars that didn't have enough
sense to stay out of the dark wet road until help
            came.

Mom started the business, when I was 4 she became a medic. When I was 11 she sustained a back injury and then had twins, and left the business until about a year ago, now she teaches at the local college. (Between that time, she was with the sheriff & did A LOT of work with Columbine) (she wasn't a sheriff, she was a paid victims advocate) She is also with the Fallen FF and travels to meet families when there is a death. She loves the job, but can't do it anymore because of a back and ankle injury. So those who can't do, teach. Her students love her!

Mom and Dad met at the firehouse in '92 and married in '93, dad got on metro fire dept here in denver in '95 and has been a medic with them since. He is also wildland, fema, and works for 2 private ambos and the fallen FF. Yeah he likes to keep busy... LOVES the job!

In 2003 I went off to EMT school & joined the volunteer dept my parents met at. I HATED it, fire is NOT my thing. I finished school and stuck on the dept for a while before being introduced to law enforcement by a close friend. I was hooked and now I'm the "cop in the family" (I'm working on my degree, my dream department won't hire without one & I am also doing forensics as I find it fascinating)

My hubby (his dad is former drug task force PD from the 70's ) is waiting on his written and will then be NREMT. He is testing with my dad's firehouse & several others. He is also working on his EKG course and a degree in fire science.

Both of my parents teach at the local college & my dad is a CPR instructor as well. So we're pretty deep rooted in the fire dept. If it wasn't for the firehouse, my parents wouldn't have met and I wouldn't be as lucky to have the family I have now!

god bless the rest of you! I know how hard this job can be!

I was a paramedic for 15 years then I had to retire due to health reasons, but that has improved to the point that I'm just starting the process of getting back into the EMS field!

Kudos, man.....helluva good field to be in....best advice I can give you is: remember to separate the job and the life, and don't let either consume the other...... ;)

Thank's Big, there's been a couple of times I'd have to step back and take a breath from the fd but then there's the time's you can't keep me away from that place lol, but thanks for the advice, would love to hear more from anyone who has any, I love learning new stuff about the job and listening to people's personal experience, so it's much appreciated, thanks, ---jess
