    Bug Out Trailer

    My family camps a lot, and lately it seems we've been getting more gear, or less space to carry it in... or both. I drive an old 95 explorer and my wife drives a Kia Sorrento... Not a a lot of room to carry gear for extended stays.
    I have always loved the adventure, and expedition style trailers that have plenty of ground clearance for off road capability.... but don't have the budget buy one of those multi thousand dollar rigs. This is the newest addition to my prep family and is (in my mind) the next best thing to my dream expedition trailer!
    It's a 3'X6' tilt (though I'll never use that feature) with 15" jeep wheels. I plan to eventually enclose it, and add tool and fuel can racks. It should make a good Bug Out Trailer as well as a gear hauler. (also might star in my INCH plan that I'm working on)



    The 12ga.... It's not just for rabbits anymore.

    Did you build it?...looks cool....here's one I'm working on...



    BTW....build a box to go in it.....don't enclose it.....just in case....

      If you plan on leaving the trailer loaded all the time, make sure to have some type of rodent bait, I found out the hard way rodents love to eat tents.and backpacks and boxes......well any way you get the idea. Nice trailer BTW.

        That's going to be a cool rig, Echo2... Keep us posted on progress. I wish I could say that I built it, but I didn't. Bought it as is with the money I got from my Taurus. BTW... Excellent idea about the "box inside". That makes much more sense. Thanks

        Good tip on the rat bait. I'll probably leave tents and gear in it most of the time, but the trailer will be garaged at that point.

          It being built for "camping"....We do a lot of stuff with our Scout Troop (Boy and Cub)....this is going to be a gear hauler and chuckwagon....

            My dad once put a camper shell on a trailer made from a pickup bed. It worked great. I'm considering that for a bug out trailer. Portable storage and living quarters.

                A very inexpensive way to go is a military surplus M101 series 3/4 ton trailer. These can be bought extremely inexpensively as surplus.
                I have of them and have paid as little as $170 for one in excellent condition with the bows and cover. They usually run about $300-350
                in this part of the country on surplus auctions. Very robust and well built.

                  On this thought, you might be able to build a box like a truck mounted camper where you could drop down legs, jack it up and pull your trailer out from under the box and have it setting ready to go. In the mean time you and the family can still use the trailer for your weekends. Then if some weekend you want to do a mock run on a bug out and evaluate your gear and setup; all you'll have to do is back the trailer under the box, lower it, strap it and hit the road.

                      In taking stock of what I have for bugging out

                      My F-250 and and V-nose enclosed trailer are high on my list of assets. I use my trailer for transporting the cabinets that I build and tools that I need to and from job-sites. In the summer I also use it to transport a lot of cooking gear to a large Cowboy action shoot to cook for 300 people. I have been thinking about making some removable storage cabinets and adding insulation as well as a roof mounted air conditioner. Its a little big to be towing through the woods and is bright red so it would stick out like a sore thumb but it will haul a lot.

                        Crap, Echo2! This picture made my mouth water. So much for having an extra time for a while. (not that I had any) Now I have got to start on one of these. I was thinking of trading my old Suburban in for a tractor/trailer rig simply because the Suburban won't carry enough stuff. (not really) :) This may be the solution. Thanks.
