  • SHTF Bike

Recently I purchased a mountain bike from a co-worker with the intent on getting into better shape and maybe being able to run a few errands around town. Well my question is this....How viable is a Mt bike in a SHTF situation such as EMP, bad weather, zombies or even martial law?

it certainly beats walking doesnt it?

I have thought about it, in the event of no fuel, or emp, it's really the only logical thing

the only problem i can see in using one is you could not carry a lot with you. I started riding about 2 weeks ago and let me say, it is a workout! I do about 3-5 miles a day (except friday because the weather sucked here!) and i daont even want to think about hauling around a BOB. I think in the event of anything besides an EMP it would most likely be a secondary means of transport.

I think that a Mountain Bike is a very viable form of transportation in TSHTF. Of course it also makes for a very good form of transportation and great way to get in shape.

I prefer the mountain bikes over the standard road bikes because of their ability to be riden rough.

Make sure you add some extra tubes, tires, chain repair kits, chain and other items in case the stores are closed.

To carry more gear many folks have plans to use one of those child carrier trailers to carry extra gear.

        Good options!!!

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

          Meant to add...

I work in another town about 30 miles from my AO. In the event of an EMP strike disabling my vehicle, I have plans to "bug back home" via bike. Luckily I have a storage building in that town to store my bug out bike, just in case...

And yes, I have attempted it and got home in about 2 hours time. Good enough for a mountain bike!

I keep a couple of mountain bikes around. I figure if I get to the point my Jeep won't go any further they may be a viable option.

Some of the best things about mountain bikes are they are silent, man-powered, light, and can go places many other vehicles can't. If you are trekking and find your road blocked or unridable you can always get off the bike and carry it easily over the debris or whatever. Any other vehicle would hit a dead end, except maybe horses.

Keep riding, you'll get in shape fast, it's a different kind of workout than running. It's not as hard to build up your muscular endurance compared to cardio. Just be sure to hydrate and salt up before you ride, soon you'll be going 16-20 miles at a time.

                  SHTF bikes

I found this link that has a few pictures and information regarding this type of idea. How will you carry a weapon long distances?

I'm day dreaming, it evolved into a question. Story first, deep breath... First off I don't really like horses. But my dream is to move outta...
