I was living in Somerset then and it was interesting to see just how quickly everything started running out.

Used to work with, and sometimes share a ride, with a guy that rode around on fumes. twice riding with him we had to walk to get gas and we were out pretty rural and this was usually somewhere between 4 & 5:30AM. Then the dumbass wanted to stop at peoples houses to ask for gas. I asked him if he was trying to get us shot. the first time we had about a 5 mile walk and luckily ran into a guy that ran us back to the truck so we weren't to late making it to the job site. Well the 2nd time he did it, I told him I'd be there napping when he got back with the gas...

To me not having gas for a few weeks is ridiculous. It's why I think it makes total sense to stockpile some at home unless of course you live in a tiny apartment. I just posted a few days ago on fuel storage. Go get yourself 6-12, (5) gal gas cans (I don't know what size cans you guys in the UK can get - 20L?) Number them with a marker 1-12 or 1-6 for each month or every other month - [1 = Jan 3 = Mar] etc. You can build up slowly, maybe you buy a can each month or maybe each payday, this way you build up slowly till you have stock. Come next June, pull out can #6, dump it in your cars tank and go refill your can with fresh fuel.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you!

I just keep a half tank full at all times and refill when it reaches this level, most people in the UK don't refill until the fuel light comes on, with half a tank I can travel 200-250 miles while they are all trying to find a filling station that still has fuel.

I seldom let the tank get down past 1/4. When it does I am looking to fill up ASAP. For those that let the light come on, and drive on fumes I hope you never have an emergency where you have to use the car to evacuate, or reach a loved one in need. Having to stop and get gas, or worse, run out of gas could be life threatening.

I live out in the British countryside not some big city, our local filling station opens at 7am and shuts at 9pm, we don't have 24 hour gas stations in rural areas, if your down on the fumes in a rural area outside of these times you'd better start walking!!

About 25-30 miles after the light comes on. I try to fill up around a half tank...I also keep 20-30 gallon of gas in storage

I was so embarrassed today. I got caught peeing in the pool. When the lifeguard yelled at me I jumped and damn near fell in.

Chefsimms, glad to see you back on form. It has been a long time since I have seen you. Hope to see you on the forum more.

I never let my car get below half a tank.

My main truck has a little over 3 gallons left when the light comes on.
That gets me more than 45 miles.

My other truck doesn't have a light, but has two tanks that can be changed with the flick of a switch.

As far as I know there is no standard either by the Gov't or industry. Figure you have enough gas for 16 miles and plan from there. Why would you travel anywhere with out at least 1/2 tank. You are asking for trouble.

Truthfully, I don't know, and I hope I never find out. There shouldn't be a little light shaped like a gas pump. There should be a warning that comes on the dashboard saying " GO GET GAS NOW!"

99% of the time there's no problem getting gas when you need it.
That other 1% there's usually enough advance warning to be prepared.
