  • Waterproof Fuse By Rusty

My project tonight is a process for making water proof fuses. You will need 3 items. Elmers glue, gunpowder and natural material string or yarn (Note that Big Saw....Natural fibre)

Step number one. Cut the string to length with your Shakelford blade.

Step number 2, mix the glue and gunpowder into a paste. Make sure you use 3 x the powder as glue. Black powder works best, but I used Bullseye brand smokeless. After you have the paste on the string, roll it liberally in more powder.

Step 3, let the fuze dry

Step 5 Light er up in the garage. FYI, it makes lots of sufury smelling smoke. Not appropriate for doing in the house. I did mine covertly in the garage.

If you use cotton string, you can dip the string in plain old water and then roll it in powder. It will not be waterproof though.

***Disclaimer. There is no way to tell the burn rate on this stuff. SOme burns fast, some burns slow. Do not rely on one batch over another if you are lighting off a cannon or something.

But I made mine. I did not have to rely on someone else to make it for me. And, with my glass shot glass, and a homemade fuse, I am building up to something!!!

Have you tested it to see if it is waterproof? Elmers glue is water soluble.

Oh, done it many times. Once it dries it is pretty much water proof. I would not want to soak it. I also used Elmers Wood glue. Not regular ELmers kiddy glue.

Cool. Ever make 'em with homemade black powder? Was thinking if you ground it fine enough and made a mud with the glue, plus left out the sulfur, you could get a pretty consistent, smokeless burn.

I made some homemade black once. But I did not use it for a fuze. Don't mess with making it anymore. Black powder, in my experience, has a pretty inconsistent burn. I did use store bought stuff, and could never tell if it was going to go "poof" or burn slow.

KNO3 is smoky stuff removing the sulpher would just cut down the smell also for home made gunpowder its easier done with sugar and KNO3 than the classic 3
