  • Random thoughts on dressing like a fish

Mao said something to the effect that one should not wear a tuxedo to an insurgancy but dress like a local. "Be a fish in the ocean." he said, sorta.
Around here if you wear a business suit or Gucci-flage your sure to be noticed, ie. outsider, possible Govt Type.
Even Wal-mart cammo is suspect, it denotes that there is a gun in the rig, and a new set of Carharts is rare enough to raise eybrows!
These days most folks here wear thier Carharts with-out washing them because washing makes em wear-out faster. Once they are worn down they are burned and replaced with cheap imports like Walls or some store brand. New Carharts cost an arm and a leg, most folk here, with the exception of boots, dress for a day's work for well under a 'C' note.
The same goes for vechicle types, local men drive bottom dollar HD PU trucks or old mini trucks, Never with a canopy. Wives may well drive the same PU or a small old SUV, Never a new rig. People who have canopys on thier PU's are invaribably from the city, and from the Western/liberal part of the state, where theft is a problem. Local vechicles have snow tires, city rigs have street tires.
Generaly I wear faded denim, flanel and brown duck canvas, very occasionaly will you find me in camo, I swim with the fishes.
During hunting season I dress completly different, I wear a white hat and shirt, my best blue jeans and my 'dress' wrist watch. If I could do it without being called a pansy, I would wear white gloves! Why? Well one of the first lessons a game warden learns when hunting poachers is to look for tell tail signs of blood on a vechicle and on the clothes of said poachers. When they errect thier roadblocks they look for 'hunters' and blood stains. A person dressed in white, sans blood stains, is obviously not a hunter nor a poacher and I am waved through every road block. There is a lesson to be learned here ,,,somewhere.
'It's good to swim with the fishes, as long as the sharks are not feeding, be ready to change your stripes when necessary.

          Kenno and Rusty,

Ya'll bring up some excellent points about dress and demeanor and how people are treated based on these things.

I noticed when I went into a Wal-Mart with a shirt from the local Chili's or Applebee's restaurant, both of which I worked at for years, people in the Wal-Mart would naturally gravitate to me and ask me for directions to a certain product or department.

I would always politely tell them I didn't work there, but since I knew the store well, I would give them good directions anyway. They thanked me and got where they needed to go.

Even though the restaurant logo was clearly emblazened on the front and back of my T-Shirt, something about a work shirt and the business-like way I carried myself made people assume that I worked at Wal-Mart. (This could also be chalked up to the high illiteracy rate in Gaston County, NC too. :D )

One thing is for sure: No one ever came up to me with inquiries when I had on a button-up dress shirt or a flannel shirt.

Another time, I went to visit my Mom at the restaurant where she worked, and I was dressed in a light blue dress shirt, dark dress slacks, a dark blue tie, and I had a briefcase, was wearing my Walkman, and had a belt case for a cell phone.

The hostess told my Mom that there was an officer here to see her. The way I dressed made the hostess think that!

          :D :D :D :D

They got this thing going on @ Walt Disney World called "the Year of a Million Dreams". There are these folks dressed in Light blue shirts and tan shorts wearing hats handing out nice perks (extra hours, shopping sprees and other EXTRAS) in different/random spots throughout the day.

So anyways I was there with the family late in the Summer, and I inadvertenly dressed in similar clothing to the "Dream Sqaud". So we was all planning to go somewhere when I noticed my "Spidey sense" was tingling and I looked around and there was a guy about 20' away. I asked him if I could help him, he replied, "got any stuff to give me???" I said "NO, Why". He then asked and replied, "Oh... I guess you are not one of those Dream squad folks... you dressed similar to them." I got a laugh out of it and so did he. So I was dressed like a Cast Member (what they call employees there)... Glad they didn't have me cleaning toliets or something:p

So yes, blend in... Don't stand out:cool: Sometimes when you are so good looking though, it is hard:D (sorry couldn't resist)

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

When I travel abroad for work, I always dressed low key trying to match my clothes to what the locals wear and no jewlery. Religious other wise not even a wedding band and always wore cheap timex watches. In my pasport photo I look and dressed like a farmer, ripped, faded yard coat, unshaven, flanel shirt and no jewlery not even my wedding band. I looked very unimportant. That way should my passport be taken I would not look like I would be worth any money or missed. Unlike the tool rich buisness man or women with the rolex watch, suite and tie, high end brief case and electronics. Do you see each grain of sand on the beach or the single sea shell. My favorite thing to hear from poeple is "sorry didn't even see you standing there"
