  • digging fro water

here's one I was talking to someone about. say happen upon a pond and you need a drink but have no way to boil your water. i have heard that if you dig a hole a few feet away from the waters edge, what seeps up through the ground is safe to drink. now is this true and if so how far away would you need to dig. and would it matter if you knew there was an animal carcass on the other side of the pond?

assume you won't have iodine, or chemicals or a filter.

Now besides boiling tell me your methods

Assume I have plenty of all, and know how to start a fire....then assume that an evap-trap works great, too....if you're bored....

create a filter using rocks and moss.or coal and moss if available. also need somthing to put it in and make small holes in the bottom......bla bla bla.... what i want to know is the water in the hole next to the lake clean enough to drink as is cause it's been filtered through the dirt. and if there is a carcus close by does that contaminate?

I would remove the carcus and find another water source if possible. depending on the flow into the pond you need to wait anywhere from 15- 30 days before drinking the water. dig your hole as far up stream from where the carcus was as possible.

How about SODIS!!! Solar Water disinfection is commonly used in many developing nations to great effect. SODIS involves fillling clear plastic bottles (1L water bottles work great) and leaving them in bright sunlight for 6-8hrs. UV radiation from the sun kills bacteria and viruses. This effect can be maximized by painting the bottom of the bottles black and laying them on a reflective surface at an angle toward the sun. Something like a sheet of reflective corrugated metal works well. Several bottles can be treated in rotation allowing a constant supply. 6-8hrs is sufficient for clear water on a very bright day, but overcast conditions require up to 3-4days.

NOTE: this method only works with reasonably clear water allowing adequate light penetration. A simple improvised sand filter can be used to remove particulates
