  • PVC Quonset Huts

I've considered Quonset Huts made of PVC & Plastic Sheeting as part of my plan. They are a quick and easy option. I have a small 1 room cabin (8x12), which is fine for camping trips but would not hold a family of 4 for long.

The PVC huts can be quickly erected for Shelter & for Green houses.

Use a slightly larger pvc pipe for ground spikes 1 1/4", insert ribs (1" pvc) in to the spikes and a union at the ridge pole. Then use duck tape or the larger pvc as clips to hold the sheet plastic to the ribs.

I have Black 6 mil for a shelter and Clear 4 mile for a greenhouse.

    Shelter for under $200.

Good idea...only problem I see is durability.

As a building contractor, I can tell you that when PVC gets anywhere near or below freezing, it becomes very brittle and very easy to break/shatter. If you're set up in a cold region with this, and a heavy wind comes along, you'd be in danger of having your supporting frame snap under stress.

    Just my $0.02...

Pretty good idea Edisto. I have built such a structure to put my boat under. Should be fine down here in the sunny south. If I lived up north and had to bug out, I believe I'd head this way! Bring mosquito spray! :D

Edisto? Are you in CharleyTown or closer to your namesake? We try to spend a week every year on E.I. every year. Haven't done it in a few. Wife's uncle was the guy that rented bikes & T.V.s. near Whaley's.

        Good Point Big Saw

I never thought about cold weather. Don't have much of that down here. I really was thinking of something, cheap, light wieght, fast and temporary.

Especialy for those members who don't have property out of the cities, and maybe trespassing when/ where ever they setup camp.

I figure for $200 you could build a 20x40 in 1-2 hours, but you will need to add this to your BO gear ahead of time. Imagine going to Lowes during a crisis?

Lazer- I am in Summerville (outside Charleston), But I have a camp about 80 miles up river from the Island (I prefer the swamp lands). I also have 2-BOL's on Lake Marion & 1 outside Savanah. Depends on the scenerio, I am packed portable and plan to vacate the city.

I guess we have some advantages to being in the south as opposed to the more severe climates. Friend of mine sent a pic taken from his front door in Regina, Sask. HE IS CRAZY! Snow was a couple of feet deep. Temps way below freezing on a "nice" day! I'll take our hot weather, bugs and snakes anyday!

Well, it's pretty mild here in AR, too, but we do have some pretty bitter winters and good winds, too....I guess my opinion wouldn't really apply to a more temperate climate....
