  • Anyone thought of a attic safe room?

Depending on the size of your attic, what about using it as a safe room? You could get a werner telescopic attic ladder... http://www.wernerladder.com/newprods/televator.php And of course you would have to lay down some osb board or something, and keep in mind it will not be bullet or fire proof, but it would be a good bug in location if needed.

I vote NO .... as you've mentioned fire .... and if you are forced to vacate the "safe" room you need to be at ground level ....

It worked for a while in 30 Days Of Night. That shit was vampire proof, man! It never showed where they relieved themselves though.

bad idea heat during the summers around is a killer around here and in a fire situations it would be the last place I woud want to be. would be a ok place to store extra gear that you might not need in an em. case like a BO were you would have five to ten min. like a wild fire or eq .

lets see, you could use solar reflective and insulation to keep the heat down. for the floor, insulate, then sound absorbent board, then thinner insulation then 3/4 plywood for the actually flooring. running water can be added. so a bathroom could be installed.

build interior walls with shelves to stock your food stuffs and other supplies.

if you need to escape, keep tools in it to cut through the roof. or install a skylight or roof hatch..

make it as sound proof as possible. if your using it as a panic room or safe room the last thing you want is people downstairs hearing you move around or snoring in your sleep.

cant say how safe it may or may not be, but to my mind its just as safe as hunkering in a basement or staying on the ground floor in the case of fire. it wouldnt make a great place to stay during a tornado either.

but against people and doing what you could to minimize risk from fire it would be a great spot. most people dont look up and do not think about attics usually.

                just MHO

lots of people in New Orleans thought their attic was a safe room. No one thought to add an axe to cut their way out. LOTS of bodies found in the attic spaces.

YES. I have a safe room in my attic (I have one of those old houses with big storage up there and I even have an attic above my attic, a crawl space the entire length of the house.
Then too, because of the rule of 3, I got a safe room downstairs too, and as I said, this is an old house, I found a secret room off one of the bedrooms.
Study your house, every single wall, ceiling, floor & steps. You can find all kinds of spaces either for locking in or secret storage.
