The prices on these things are insane. $15k for a fiberglass closet without furnishings? Add transport and installation expenses and you have just priced people out of the market.

My solution would simply be a 40 foot steel shipping container buried, maybe even 2. hidden Vent holes, with proper filtration valves etc etc, a much much much cheaper solution, they can be had for less 1k

I agree, with some reinforcing one can make a serious retreat with shipping containers. Water, waste and electricals could all be worked out with planning. Naturally I am assuming we are not talking bombs/nukes here much less chemical/biological attacks.

Its highly unlikely to happen. BUT in the spirit of disaster preperation and survival and can not rule anything out, so yes that would be taken into account in my designs and deployment.

Wow, okay you are certainly going to have to spend serious money then. The nuclear weapons that are deployed now are crazy large. Radiation you can prepare for with enough soil and air filtration but the blast and overpressure anywhere near your location (I mean within a mile) is going to be brutal. Be prepared for the eventuality of a month plus of shelter before radiation has dissipated enough to move around. Just the amount of water/waste services is eye popping. Cooling such an enclosure for an extended period is outside most peoples ability to afford.

Don't watch the movies of 1 megaton government test explosions knocking down houses to judge the destructive force of these monsters, think 10 mile radius for a ground burst and even more for an air burst though certainly a buried bunker would fare much better. As for terrorism, the odds there are just non-existent unless you live in NY, LA, Seatle, Chicago, Houston or similar.

Again, this is my non-expert opinion so take it for what it is worth.

yeah well the likelyhood of being with in 10 miles or even 100 miles of anything hitting is about .000000005%, so i'm more concerned with radiation fallout, zombies forcing people to leave etc..

Not that i'm about to do it but i have thought about it.

If I create/build the farm where i want to, and build a cabin, then i may install said fallout below it though, why not, if you're already in the process of building anyways ya know.

                  Diesel,
I'm in agreement with you about fallout if you are in a top metroplex fallout pattern. Luckily I am in the prevailing winds of nothing but a nuc power plant in West Texas.

I'll save my $$ for more pressing concerns.
