  • SHTF in the Big City

After living in Miami for a few months now, I am convinced of one thing:

If a true SHTF situation happens, I'm not getting out of here alive....

This city is so congested, so tightly packed, with so many people....people who aren't prepping.... people living off of the government....

I see this town going up in flames.... rioting.... looting..... and gunfire....

If it was just me, I might....MIGHT be able to slip out.... but I have my doubts even about that....

I can only hope that where I live doesn't get shot up or burned down to the ground.... then I just hunker down and let the savages duke it out.....

The one good thing is that with this knowledge comes a kind of acceptance, and a lessening of worry about what I have no control over....

I still hate living here, though.....

It would scare the heck out of me too Amy.

      Amy,

I know it looks like a crappy situation, but it is survivable with the right training and equipment. I wouldn't lie to you, not about this. It takes some understanding of sniper/recon type training and learning how to be a grayman when needed. Are you interested?

        Two weeks.

        Maybe less....

Hunker down. Lights out. Block your door(s) and windows.

They'll be a WHOLE lot less people. It'll give you room to maneuver. Anybody can do 2 weeks. You can do it.

I know how you feel Amy. I am working temporarily in houston. It takes an hour to drive across town with light traffic. I too came to the conclusion that trying to leave is pointless and staying put for a while the best option.

              I feel for you Amy.
I'm 5 hrs south of amarillo this trip, and goodg to bf Oklahoma from here.
Pocket preps only, limited space in work truck. I'd have to fab a real kit on the fly.
              I'm living your dreams!

Just remember that after the 2 weeks, the ones left will be the survivors, which includes those opportunistic survivors that will be most dangerous.

If it is a major collapse, then after your 2 weeks, find a way to get out. I will email you some thoughts.

A Few thoughts about bugging-in vice leaving.

                        1. You must establish extra supplies before the event starts. No-one must know about those supplies. Hide them. Your neighbors will remember in the back of their minds if you are talking about preppering, or you have shown them things you have stored even years before the event.

                        2. Make no major changes to the outside of your home. I.E. digging a trench line or placing bared wire. You have to blend in, in fact your home should look like it needs major repairs.

                        3. No new car/truck sitting outside the garage. In fact have your car either in the garage or back yard behind your privacy fence.

                        4. Inside the home have every outside door re-enforced. Every window should have a cut piece of plywood fitted to the frame, and ready to be screwed into place every 6 inches around the frame with 3 inch screws.
                        (First Floor Only).

                        5. If your home has a second floor - it may be your last place of refuge. Keep at least one window with plywood that can be opened from the inside. Have a ladder inside that can reach the ground.

To do this use a fitted piece of plywood with a long closed face bolt that will reach through the window and through a 2"x4"x36" that will fit across the wind frame inside the window with the nut tighten down. Once the nut is taken off, and bolt is pushed out through the 2x4, the whole window covering will come down.

OK, here comes the wet blanket. If you are in a metro area like Miami, you have to get out BEFORE everything goes bad. I realize the job problem. But there are other jobs in other places... places less deadly than over-crowded metro areas. You are in shark-infested waters and all that is required for the feeding frenzy to begin is a drop of blood in the water. How do you survive that? How does anyone remain hidden in an apartment complex made of light-weight construction and a prime target for the tribal gangs? You still have to travel to work unless you don't go to work. In that case the job would be history, anyway. Get out!

Alright, back to the normal programing. ;-)

I agree with you jez, to a point. There are ways to move through highly dangerous/hostile urban environments and survive it. Even places like Bosnia, Mogadishu, Bangkok, etc. have been places that at times were more like the wild west during the Detroit Riots and still trained U.S. operators entered these areas dressed as civilians, collected there intel and egressed to report and prepare to do it again. It's not ideal by any stretch of the word, but it is done. Some here remember the riots and problems in the Philippines in the 1980's. A Caucasian male should have stood out to the point of getting killed, but still recon was conducted. I agree, it's better to get out before a sh!t storm hits, but there is always the chance for people living in metro areas to miss that window of opportunity. Just my .02 cents.
