I'm certainly not knowledgable enough to contribute much to this thread but have some fuel for thought.
For 7 years I lived aboard a sailboat. The onboard systems ran on 110 ac and 12 volt dc which fed from a battery bank that was charged by shore power, engine, generator, solar, and wind.
The appliances were designed to consume small amounts of power and many were dual voltage.
The marine industry may be a good source in setting up an off-grid home. At least it may be worth some research when purchasing components...
