  • Best knife sharpener?

    I have a few good knives, but I dont have a good knife sharpener yet. Someone steer me in the right direction. What do you think of SOG Countertop knife sharpener?

    If you guys say its a good one, Ill go ahead and order it. If not what would you choose? I found this particular one for $13 plus shipping.

    I used to make knives as a custom maker, I had some very expensive sharpening stones which I hated to use. Mostly I used my 72" belt grinder and my 1.5HP 14" buffing wheel because I am a klutz when it comes to holding a knife blade at the same angle to freehand sharpen a knife! I bought a used sharpening kit that had 3 sets of stones that are held in a jig so the angle is maintained throughout the sharpening process. The dang thing actually worked! So that is what I recomend.

      Well today I picked up a yellow hand held sharpener with rubber grips setting it on the table. It has a course side and a fine side. Made by smith and was under $5.

          a soft arkansas stone with a little diesel fuel on it works the best if you are skilled at sharpening. If not, the diamond coated sharpeners work alright.

            Over the years I've tried everything that came along to sharpen knives , ceramic sticks those high dollar electric sharpeners that have the diamond wheels ( at least that's what they claim,when I tore it apart to make the wife a diamond necklace I never did find the damn diamonds ) the problem with those is I always ended up burning the blade. I end up coming back to the old Arkansas stones like Axle said only instead of diesel fuel,I use Olive Oil just in case I need to cut something I intend to eat with the blade I'm sharpening . Olive oil tastes better than diesel,or three in one, just my personal preference.

              RS, I started rinsin mine off after I was done sharpnin and that diesel taste went away ....

                I never could get the smell of diesel rinsed off just about anything ,unless I rinsed it with gas. And that always left a bad taste too.:D

                  well the best I have found is a M.h. light bulb filament preferably already burned in.

                      break the bulb pull the filament out and use it like a regular ceramic or tungesten stone. It will put a super clean edge on any knife.

                        The filament is normally aobut 4 inches long and 3/8 in diameter. It is fragile and takes some getting used to.
