I have a machete, I just don't keep it in my backpack.

Can't get all the little ones together for a group hug, here are most of them.

Anybody else have one of these?

Yeah, they're geared toward hydrant and entry tools....the woodsman's pal is the absolute best I've found so far....excepting maybe a good, heavy homemade machete (leaf springs are awesome).....most of the commercial machetes today are either weak stainless and/or too light for serious hewing, or just plain cheaply made...suitable only for light clearing....

I picked up a spax from ebay, brand new $35 or so. It is a neat tool, but if I remember what I read, they are more slated toward emergency extractions (firefighting/emt) than a wood chopper, and after receiving mine, I would agree... oh it will chop wood alright, but likely not as good as an axe created for the purpose... but in the BOV, I think it would be a good fit. I have had it a few months, but haven't had the opportunity to field test yet.

I have used many cutting tools over the decades. In Australia, the best tool I had was a custom D-2 steel Barang, it worked like a heavy machete with a defensive point, if the wood was green you could chop it down with that thing.
In the North Woods of the USA I have found that a full sized axe or a very sharp saw works great. Do not forget to cut, and use, wooden wedges when sawing anything bigger than 3" or you can get your saw trapped (too late to make wedges after saw is trapped!). Saws are a must for building shelters, traps and snares. I once used a hatchet in -20 degree temps, it bounced off a piece of fire wood and sliced my shin open. Due to the cold I did not notice untill my boot filled with blood and left a track in the snow. I no longer recomend hatchets.

I have to say if you are looking at an axe that small a good machete will do more things for you with less effort and less weight, look on you tube and you can see the uses. I have a cold steel 18" barang and it splits wood wonderfully. It chops stuff down as well, JMHO

I have a nubby Fiskers too, sometimes I carve an extension handle for it if I need more reach. But most of the time I carry a 20 inch saw blade and wisk up a frame for it. Sawing is more efficient, less noise and lots faster.

Around the house I keep half a dozen hand axes, a couple long axes and a maul that splits wood faster than a 20 ton splitter.

I use the hand axes mostly for carving wood and splitting lighter pine.
