  • Need help looking for a knife

I'm looking for an everyday pocket knife. I'm not familiar with what's out there, seems like there is a million to choose from. But, I haven't found what I'm looking for yet.
    My requirements are:

    US made
    Fold and lock
    assisted, fast one hand opening
    3"-4", half serrated blade
    a decent grip
glass breaking or hardened, pointed bottom
    preferably less than $50

To give an idea of what I'm looking for here are knives I've looked at:

Benchmade (HK) 14440 Ally. It has the glass breaking bottom. But, it's ugly and imported.

    and

Benchmade (HK) 14200-70X. Decent looking knife, not my favorite. lacking a hard bottom.

I'm not stuck on any brand, that's just for an idea of what appeals to me. Your help is appreciated.

Benchmade makes a nice knife, but I have never been able to bring myself to the point of paying for one. They cost too much for me. I have been sold on the Gerbers for a long time now. They hold a good edge, sharpen easily, and are very well made. No blade wiggle or cheap feel to it, just a good solid knife. I also like a standard blade for most uses. The serrated blade is ok, but I have no experience with sharpening them.

      Thanks Cudalyon,

I checked out Gerber's site and found the Hinderer CLS. That's what I'm looking for except a belt clip would be nice. Edit: it does have a belt clip. The MSRP is $96, ouch. A quick google turned up multiple $50-$60 sources.

I'm not done yet though. I like to have choices.

Kershaw is a good choice unless you can find a Case made in the USA.I'm pretty sure most new ones will be the gook model.

Another +1 for the Kershaw... may not be the best steel in a knife, but it is strong enough for my needs and it is easy to keep sharp/sharpen :)

Big C's carries Kershaw... where I get mine if you are anywhere near Drexel/Valdese NC...

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

I have a couple very similar to the one listed here:

One of mine is assisted... and one is auto. The assisted has a metal (aluminum) handle ... the blade is decent, it holds an edge pretty good... the opening is quick... the lock is sure... not a bad price

                  Tony,
I've collected folding and fixed blade tactical knives for many years. Unless you are planning to carve a horse out of granite or pry open car doors, any of these brands will serve you well: CRKT, Sog, Gerber, Spyderco, Kershaw, Buck, Ka-bar, and Cold Steel. I have owned and used all of them. They are all reasonbly priced. You can spend more money and there are some better knives out there but any of these will serve you well. Some of the best knife prices I have found are on Smokeymountainknifeworks.com. I have done business with them and they treated me right. Good luck with your purchase.

The gerber hinderer comes in two styles. The red handle one comes with pouch sheath because it also has a little tool kit. It does have a pocket clip. They also make it in a black model called the CLS = Combat Life Saver. This one only has the pocket clip. Now for features they both have. 50/50 blades, O2 wrench, folding seat belt or para cord cutter and widow punch. The big difference is the red handled one is not sharpened at the tip of the blade were the CLS is very sharp all the way to the tip and on the CLS the blade and knife are black but neither are spring assisted. The place I work part time sells Cold steel, K-bar, CKRT, Benchmade, Browning, Berretta, Gerber, Randall, Leatherman, Spyderco, Marbles, Sog, Boker, S&W, Remmington, Buck, Kershaw and a couple more that I am forgeting. The best part is we also sell used knives and this is were you see the cool stuff. Old school Gerber BMF, LMF and original Mark 2's. Chris Reeves knives like the Green beret. Tom brown knives, TOPS, MOD, SIG, Blackhawk, Buckmaster, Al Mar, Blackjack, Razer and old military knives. So there are some weeks I don't take home a paycheck:D

Kershaw 1550 is exactly what you are looking for. Comes in 2 blade styles, one of which is half serated. Its a Ken Onion design. Been carrying one for about 3 years, and have beat it up. Daughter had one also, but one of her loser friends lifted it. Runs around $65, but can be had for $40 or so on the auction websites. Just found one on Ebay; http://cgi.ebay.com/Kershaw-Knife-Bl...temQQptZKnives

I know it doesn't meet your cost requirement, but I have had and carried a 50/50 Spyderco Military for four years and it is without a doubt the finest folder I have ever owned. It locks up fast and tight, and takes and holds an edge better than anything I have ever put my hands on.
