  • Need help with a debate

I know I'm in the right, just need to formulate an intelligent answer. All I've been able to come up with is "You're so stupid"

My home computer crapped out about 3 weeks ago, I was rather upset about it. I mentioned to hubby that I have a bunch of info on there I was in the midst of printing out (edible plants, building shelters, raising chickens, building wind turbine). So that started the debate.

He says that the day TSHTF (whatever form of excrement it may be), he is the smart one and while everyone else is rioting in the streets and looting Walmart, he's going to the library and getting books on how to survive (mainly on edible plants, he's a true Macgyver in many other areas). I suggested he get the books NOW and start garnering knowledge. He insists that he can wait until the day TSHTF. And that the books are all he'll need, he's not going to stock up on gear or supplies now either.

Whereupon my reply is "You're so stupid"

what would you say in reply of this debate? I'd really rather keep him during an emergency situation-he's strong and handy, but obviously he's going to be too busy at the library to help me keep this family alive...

Bro, it's just like I told my wife, If something happens, You Head Straight Home! I don't want anybody going through some mob. She works at a High School. Our rally point is our home, then we make plans as needed. Think about the Rodney King riots, Katrina, etc. We saw first hand what people out of control do in a panic. You drive into a town/city and they see a vehicle as a escape whether you are in it or not, and they will over power you. Never underestimate the strength of a crowd of people....Just my opinion. I love it when an early morning post makes me laugh!...the rest of the day always goes better!...LOL
I'd repeat the initial response several times, then ask him if he realizes that all of the other stupid people will be trying to beat him to the library.
If you're a domestic engineer...perhaps "forgeting" to prepare dinner one day, and saying "I thought you were going to stop by the library for take-out" would steer the debate in your favor.

You said it Brosia, not me but if I wasn't stocking up I'd hit the Wal-Mart on the way to the library. At least you could use the books for fuel!!Looting the library will still get you a felony, in NC anyhow!! I guess he'd be the only one there though, lol.

I think your response was quite adequate in itself....

Try to convince him that knowledge is much more useful and efficient when it has become "muscle memory"...... rather than having to consult a text for every little tip, why not just pretend you're Bill Nye and have fun learning new things NOW.

And instead of stupid, try lazy...might get a better response...my SWMBO always does.

The big question to ask him would be "And if you can't get to the library, what is next?" Guess it is time to roll over and quit because the book is not available. What if someone checked that book out last week?

Just say "Yes dear, that makes perfect sense." That is sure to shake him up.

Maybe he's concerned about toilet paper......how many sheets is in the average library? We could have a new catch phrase: "When the poop hits the paper". I'm all for knowledge, but you better have it in advance.

You made me laugh!!! I'm here at work, giggling uncontrollably at my computer, the guys here looking at me. Mind you, these are the same guys who are in complete agreement with my husband (and who plan on going to the library with him), so they just wouldn't understand.

to them, me just silly woman.

                        Just bought hubby a book.

The Forager's Harvest: A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting, and Preparing Edible Wild Plants (Paperback)
                        by Samuel Thayer

The author notes in his intro that this book should be useful to foragers everywhere, but particularly in these regions: GREAT LAKES, MIDWEST, NORTHEAST AND THE SOUTHERN PART OF EASTERN CANADA

Books are great, and going to Walmart in any form of armed fashion would be a felony...because every walmart now has a BANK inside it. So, I wouldn't go to a walmart...heck I hate going to walmart on a good day...hell think how bad it is in the south, when we have snow...BREAD and MILK!!!! It's a supermarket frenzy! Little old ladies will clip you in the balls in the south to get their Bread and Milk when it snows. I mean, most people don't read... so he might be relatively safe at a library, and physical books provide 2 things needed for survival, knowledge and kindling for starting fires. I would at least stock some vital things, instead of hoping on a book to get me through, because the first thing a book is going to tell you, is the tools, equipment, chemicals and other things you NEED in order for the book to help you. The books can also all be downloaded online, in pdf format, and stored somewhere on your person in a USB flash Drive. Make a solar charger for your laptop...and you will be set. lol. That all being said, any person with a brain can see that the books will only help you, if you have the tools, etc in advance to use the knowledge in them.
