Milk Sandwiches

O.K. heres the situation..It's gonna snow or ice or rain cats and dogs or frogs. A hurricene from hell..o a tornado a tsunami or something It's on the news on the radio or the gossip at the workplace. Whats the first thing to go??? A good friend of mine married a girl from up north a few years ago. She sees a few snow flurries comeing down on her way home from work.As she nears the local grocery store she decides to pick up something for dinner.She notices all the folk with their bread and milk standing in line waiting to check out.The supply was down to soy milk and hot dog buns so she decline to purchace these.When she got home with her, lets say meat and potatoes she asked''what the hell do you people do around here?eat milk sandwiches?''

LOL. I saw that basic scenerio once living in Georgia. It was December something of '99 and I needed to pick up a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, and some peanut butter, but upon entering the grocery store, there was no bread, no milk, four cans of peanut butter left, canned food was in such disarray I couldn't tell what was what, meats were all but gone, and bottled water was scarce. I was laughing all the way back home.

It happens all the time now up here in new england, thanks to the media. When I was growing up any snow storm under 5" was called a dusting anything deeper was called a snow storm. Now the news calls anything over 5" a blizzard and the go into the STORM WATCH 2009 mode and they reccomend people stock up on bread milk and batteries. I think they work people up into a panic just to make better news stories. I just sit back and laugh at them running around like chicken little. I really dont raise an eyebrow unless more than 16" is forcast and even then it is just making sure everthing has fuel and will start, ei. chainsaws, gen, snowblower, front end loader and my truck has its plow hooked up and winch, chains and straps in tool box. Then I just sit back and watch it happen.Oh no I just figured it out the other peoples back up generators must run on milk and they burn bread as fuel in their wood stoves:eek:. Boy I am doing eveything wrong then.:rolleyes:

I worked in the grocery industry for 21 years and we absolutely hated to even hear the word snow in the weather forecast. People went nucking futs and paniced. What we thought was funny was to watch the people fight over the last loaf of bread or gallon of milk.

I asked one lady with about $200 worth of frozen pizzas and ice cream if she was having a party and she said "no i'm stocking up in case it gets bad and the power goes out".
I guess she was going to store all that frozen stuff in the back yard to keep it cold.:D

Portland OR was hit with a series of 'Artic Blasts' (trade marked). They started warning PPL 7 days before the storm hit, only a few PPL prepared or even bought chains. Portland and the PNW was completely overwhelmed when the storm did hit, took a week to dig out and 25 PPl died due to useing BBQ's anp open fire inside homes. Now there is a repeat of last years flooding and again PPL have done nothing to prepare!

I would like to address this subject with a compasionate tone. The reason most folks freak out and buy stuff is that they too have a survival mindset. However you and I know that it is the incorrect way of doing things. So, here is my challenge to you, everyone here.

Find someone you know, and engage them in conversation about what I call "soft" survival topics. Maybe just talk about Israel and refer to being prepared if something bad happens here. Maybe talk about the snow storms up north and mention the same.

I am not talking about bringing up tinfoil hat subjects, or conspiracy things. Everyone has the right to believe what they want. And there are some conspiritorial things that make sense to me, but we do not want to scare folks off. We want folks to prepare for themselves, to be a good neighbor, and have less reliance on the government.

Understood. But you and I both know that preppers consist of all types. Folks that prepare for a local event that is a temporary crisis, folks that prepare for long term sociatial colapse, and folks that are convinced that Zombies live below ground and are conspiring with alien forces to overtake us sun walkers. What I am saying, is if you just talk about preparing for a small disaster, nobody will be offeneded. If you start talking about your supply of dried garlic and holy water to ward off the undead, you will scare off a lot of folks who may be interested in being prepared, but were never taught, or are too busy with daily life to think about it.

Rusty's making sense here, folks. I'm helping a co-worker, these days. The 3-Day mindset is there, but the actual preps aren't....yet. We're getting there, though. And I have to say, they've been extremely appreciative that I brought it up. It's not something that people want to bring up. Rather than worry about what all the "sheeple" will do later, we should be shearing a few of them. Might find another Sheep Dog or two out there!

I'm not sure you fully understand this phenomenon that I've found is peculiar to NC and upstate SC.

You see, the very people who line up at the store for bread and milk whenever the word "snow" is whispered are the same ones who chortle and snicker at us if they see us buying a Corona Grain Mill and a 50 lb bag of hard red winter wheat.

The "bread-and-milk" mob are the same ones that would bring code enforcement down on your head if they caught you raising hens or rabbits in your suburban back yard, even if not one critter ever invaded the neighbor's yard.

The same mentality that gets into fisticuffs in a store over a loaf of Wonder Bread and a bottle of Pet Whole Artery-Clogger are the same people who gulp and stammer at the thought of a peaceful honest citizen carrying arms either open or concealed without government approval.

I don't think that the "bread-and-milk" mob are simply misguided Survivalists. And when they do the same thing Winter after Winter, year after year without fail, I don't think even your wise down-to-earth words will convince them to take a different course in life. They'll either need a more traumatic epiphany or they won't see the light at all.

By the bye, except when I'm at work in my retail store, I don't ever have a chance to talk to "bread-and-milk-ers" because I've got my bread and milk weeks before, along with vanilla flavoring, chocolate syrup, and several of those Carnation Evaporated Milk Sons-o'-Bitches to make Snow-Cream. Also, I have the good sense to not drive on snow-piled roads unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

I understand the mentality. I lived in an upscale neighborhood north of Ft Worth for 9 years. However, after I really started talking to folks with the same mentality as the ones to whom you are refering, folks started looking into things themselves. I actually had neighbors coming by every so often telling me that they found x, y or z on sale and bought 5 of them at a cheap price. They were wanting my approval. Living by example by being kind to folks and talking to them like people instead of like they are yuppie scum will go a long way to move them foreword. Even if they just buy some estra stuff every so often because they remember what you said.
