  • Be discrete.

It’s the posers and whack jobs that give preppers and survivalist a bad image. I had a customer asking me a lot of questions about crossbows the other day and really beating around the bush when I asked him what he wanted it for. Then he tells me he wants it for his BOB but I didn’t tip my hand to let him know about my background. He asked me what you could kill with one and I explained most animals in North America would not be an issue. He then again asked me what animals and I told him bear, deer, hogs and more. He asks me how I know and I tell him that I have done a bunch of wild hog hunts with a crossbow. I know what he is asking and I am trying to tell him it will do what he wants. Then he comes out in a loud made to be heard by everyone around him voice “so I can use this to kill people”. I told him that that was a question I could not answer and at that time I had to decline selling him a crossbow. True preppers know how to be discrete, fly under the radar and get supplies and ask questions with out drawing attention. It is like the people who ask to see a knife and then mimic a bunch of what they think are knife fighting moves they think are going to impress me. Ok my rant is over.

He might have been showing off for some buddies. I know a guy who went to the farm supply store to get fertilizer and when the kid loaded it into his truck he said well thanks now I can go blow sh!t up! He was kidding of course but I don't think the kid knew it. People say some crazy stuff without thinking. I hope he was only joking with you.
A government that can give you everything you need is also strong enough to take it away!

That's where you want to dig a hole and jump in - or bury the big talker.

P.S. I've found when someone asks, "What do you want this for?" Just tell them that it looks like fun - whatever it is. Don't much care if they think I'm a hosehead, it's good camo!

The gov will do a fine job of shedding bad light on those the media have characterized as survivalists / preppers without the help of imbeciles .... could this guy been trying to set you up?

I don't think he was trying to set me up, I think he was one of those people in which a little knowledge is a bad thing. I also think he was trying to impress me with words like BOB and SHTF hoping I would bite and ask what they were. I have said in one other post that I am getting more and more people looking for specialized supplies. There seems to be two groups, the 1st is really trying to be prepared and the 2nd group is doing because it seems cool.

Does the idiot realize that if he advertises what he is doing in public, when the shtf bad people who aren't prepared are going to come looking for him and take what he has. And to make things worse when they do take everything he has what is he going to do call the police? If there are still police officers in that situtation I think they might be a little too busy to come to his aid.

It's a shame, but many of the newer age preppers are like this. Especially the city slickers that are trying to ride the "survival" fad.

Why? HE is good camo for you. He's out there squeaking, he's the one who'll get greased. You pull a fade.

Yeah....but it's also folks like that....that make the rest of us appear as if the cheese has slid off our cracker.....He's probably in the same realm of folks that think that if they have a gun....they will be able to take what they want in the event of the SHTF.

I think preppers are becoming much more mainstream these days.

I told ya'll on another thread about the guy I work with who says he has a gun and will take what he needs. We discuss NOTHING about preps around him, or most people for that matter.

We keep it mum as well. As I said recently in another post... I've tried to reach out to folks, to meet other preppers. The openess policy is a dicey one at best and one we now avoid. With that said, I'm still one prepper with a family and part of no group or network. Frustrating sometimes as there is clearly strength in numbers... not to mention the emotional/morale building aspects of finding/planning/interacting with like minded folk. Still, OPSEC rules the day...

When making large warehouse shopping runs, we try to plan our arrival home during darkness. When packing buckets, it's done garage door down, and will move indoors as soon as things heat up around here. When ordering online, I request brown box treatment (they'll ship to you with their boxes/logos turned inside-out). And I always get stuff off the front porch in short order after delivery. This is key... lots of deliveries come here. Nosey non-prepper neighbors poking around, asking question... don't need that (I hate lying).
