I would assess what skills you and other people in your family or other survival group have. List what each person is best at, and what secondary skills each person has. Find those skills which seem to be lacking in the group and concentrate on learning those.

started a topic Jack of all trades.

    Jack of all trades.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

I have a Jack of all trades mentality in my preperation for SHTF. I guess that comes from the fact that I am somewhat a Jack of all trades in my current situation. I have had experience in several areas that would be helpful. But I am not real good at too many things. I am confident that I could survive most situations for a certain length of time. True long term survival may require that I have some specific skills to offer if I need to join a group. It seems like most of the basic skills will be covered by one or more individuals. I am trying to think of a set of skills that is uncommon yet would be of great importance. I have been thinking that it would be wise to specialize and hone my skills in 1 or 2 specific areas.
