  • Gold.... Where to buy, and general info

This topic is spawned from a previous post by DavidM concerning gold vs dollar. In an attempt to avoid thread jacking that post, I would like to ask a few questions here.

I'm looking for general information on gold... Where to purchase? what pitfalls await? good deals, great deals and even the bad deals. I have a small coin collection from my youth, but a few buffalo heads, liberties, and an Indian head or two isn't going to help a whole lot when things go bad. Where do I find coins worth their gold content rather than collectors value.

Google has been informative, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has some first hand knowlege that they can share.

Look at Kitco for current prices; kitco.com/mobile is nice and quick.

APMEX is a great company to deal with that has bullion in various 'non-numismatic' forms. Order with a check to avoid fees and the shipping is 25 bucks IIRC no matter the quantity...

Gold coins will always have the "collectors" value added to them since gold coinage isn't really used for tender any longer. Though you can spend that $50 dollar gold American Eagle for $50 if you want.

SO with that said NEVER buy gold coins for the purpose of using them for money "after the fall". Buy gold rounds or bullion(same thing really just different shape). THere are several reputable places that you can buy them.
Buy Gold, Silver, Platinum & Palladium Bullion online at APMEX.com. Find rare numismatic coins & currency with fast, free shipping on orders +$199. Shop - APMEX

That is the place that I buy my one gold coin every 6 months.

Also you might want to consider looking into silver rounds. THere are several reasons for this. If things go south most people won't be able to give you "change" for you gold coin. Silver coins will be much better suited for trading for everyday items than gold will be. But get a few gold coins for the prupose of trading for "big" ticket items, that is what I got mine for. On the other hand i have a little over 100 Amercan Silver Eagles or silver rounds. THe Eagles will be worth something if the crash doesn't happen and will be worth even MORE if it does. The majority of the eagles came from various estate sales and one yard sale where i got 10 uncirculated still in their sealed shipping box silver Americal Eagles for $50!!!! WIsh I could fine a hundred more like that.

I buy from Monex. You should also consider silver, as it is not as over-inflated as gold is right now.

I found a number of local coin dealers which I go to randomly. I use a SDR, park down the street, and pay cash.
