  • September is Emergency Preparedness Month

I know this is short notice, just found out myself, but I am going to try and go to this.

There is an emergency preparedness fair this weekend at:Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
    13901 Quail Run
    Little Rock, AR 72209
    Otter Creek
    Saturday 10-2pm
Arkansas emergency officials say the big one is coming, but they don't know what it will be or when it will get here.

The state Department of Emergency Management issued a reminder Wednesday for people to be prepared for a disaster, an earthquake or a tornado or a flood, or something else. At a meeting with reporters in North Little Rock, the department said regional disasters like ice storms and tornadoes prepare for bigger disruptions.

One official said a major earthquake on the New Madrid Fault would make this year's ice storm in northeastern Arkansas "a piece of cake" by comparison. Another said that just by living in Arkansas, people should be prepared for any sort of disaster.

These fairs usually have blood drives and police depts. take childrens photos and there is always lots of free info.. Some have vendors and demos of emergency related products.. If your in the area and have nothing to do, drop in..

Unfortunately I was unable to attend this meeting. Too many prior commitments to keep. However, I did find out that they are having one in my home town next month (oct. 3 --Conway, AR) if anyone is interested.

We had our prepper get together this past weekend. It was great weather and a good time. We learned about dutch oven cooking over an open fire and had a wonderful venison roast, a talk on radio communications with most of us making a firm decision to get HAM radios in the next couple of months, we had a food prep talk and a talk on economics.
We also planned a "bug out" for those who think they might have to do so. We looked at maps and planned a relay of rest stops and gas stashes on the route some would take. It was really good!:D

            NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH, 2009
            - - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
            A PROCLAMATION

Preparedness is an essential element of a resilient and secure Nation. My Administration has made preparedness a top priority, and we are working every day to ensure our country stands ready to respond to any disaster or emergency -- from wildfires and hurricanes, to terrorist attacks and pandemic disease. Our goal is to ensure a more resilient Nation -- one in which individuals, communities, and our economy can adapt to changing conditions as well as withstand and rapidly recover from disruption due to emergencies.

During National Preparedness Month, we underscore the responsibility of individuals, families, and communities -- including the private and nonprofit sectors -- to do their part before an emergency. I urge all Americans to take time to prepare an emergency supply kit and a family emergency plan, and to educate themselves about potential disasters. I also ask Americans to work within their own communities to coordinate emergency preparedness efforts. All Americans share this responsibility, and we must all work together to safeguard the Nation from harm.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) supports and promotes citizen education and grassroots preparedness efforts. FEMA's Ready Campaign provides simple and practical steps that
all Americans can take to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors. Additionally, the Citizen Corps educates, trains, and coordinates volunteer activities that help make our communities safer and better prepared for emergencies. I encourage all Americans to learn more at www.ready.gov and www.citizencorps.gov.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 2009 as National Preparedness Month. I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the importance of preparing for potential emergencies beforehand and to observe
this month with appropriate preparedness activities, events, and training to enhance our national resilience.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

            BARACK OBAMA

It seems we have a day or month that recognizes everything else, so why not "prepardness".

I was working at a regional fair/expo yesterday and stopped to talk to some FEMA guys. Since no one was around and they had become familiar with me during the day, I got bolder and asked them some more tricky questions.
One thing I learned is that (at least in MA) there will be no manditory vaccines! Since they refered to it as one of the "plans" that had been discussed and said "thankfully they aren't in any way going to do that crap" I figured there may have been some internal revolt that went on. (snicker)
They were fairly open, probably because they think of themselves as a small and much under funded group in this state. They said that the ice storm this past winter pushed them to the absolute limit of what they were capable of.
They said that there was no way the government could impliment that plan on man power alone, let alone the fact that there isn't that much vaccine.

They also talked a lot about preparedness and seemed genuinely glad that there were people out there who were ready. They "tested" me on my preps and made a few suggestions, gave me a list of items they thought were important and agreed that a minimum people should go with is 6 weeks-3 months. It was a very interesting talk. I asked them what "big" event they felt was coming down the pike and they said "now that H1N1 isn't going to be big (again snicker)..." they thought a dirty bomb in larger cities was what was being talked about and an EMP.
