While being fit and strong are normally advantages in survival situations the mental aspects of survival are my number one priority. There have been countless studies done, books written, and essays published about children surviving while adults in the same situation perish. Small children with only a diaper and cotton tee shirt surviving alone in the woods for a couple days until found by SAR. Elderly people surviving days with no equipment or help in the woods until found. Same number of studies, books and essays of lifelong hunters found dead less than a mile from their truck or camp. Avid hikers with all the gear they need to survive dying one hundred yards from a blazed trail. So on, and so on.
Survival is a mental game. You can’t muscle your way through everything when you haven’t eaten properly in several days. Thinking calmly, clearly, focusing, and using your imagination to improvise. Those are the traits I want, not big biceps. (Although the big biceps have a high CDI factor!) Read stories about POW’s, survivors of the concentration camps and survivors of the Bataan Death March. They were neither strong nor healthy. With no gear, very little to no food or medical aid they persevered.
How do you account for all those feats? There are lots of books about this subject out there. One that comes to mind is “Deep Survival,” by, Laurence Gonzales. ([ame]http://www.amazon.com/Deep-Survival-Who-Lives-Dies/dp/0393326152[/ame])
Being healthy is a good start but it’s been proven time and time again to not be what is most important when it comes to who lives or dies.
IMHO, YMMV…………….

Right on
I agree with what has been said previously. These things are important, but the most important thing is your boots, they should be broken in before hand and I would get some foot comforters like gell or something. Next be committed in your resolve (never give up), seize the day and remember, as you train so shall you fight. just my thoughts....

[in survival mode i know physical / mental health is important. to me you need to be more mentally fit to deal with survival, and have the ability to adapt and over come situations. your state of mind is very important. witch one is most important to each of you?]
I realize that some day I may be forced from my home so I have begun to prepare for just such occasion. Just for reference I am in my 50's and not a former infantry guy....that said, I have been humpin a ruck every other night for the past three months.... I am now humpin 75 lbs for 3.7 miles in an hour.... my first mistake was to plan my route passing by the front of my house for more than one pass, as in the beginning I would say enough for tonight..... Now when I think to quit early I keep telling myself that the opposition is not going to quit when I get tired..... They'll be younger ...better equipped ..... have a great base for support.... but hopefully not as determined as I am. My body has responded remarkably well and I'm ready to add more weight and perhaps a little more time / distance.... the mental and physical go hand in hand. A weakness in either domain will cause your failure
so prepare .... a little at a time and keep in mind your purpose. Good luck.
O.W.

I put a lot of stock in your mental well being. From trials in survival school to Climbing the mountain volcanoes of the Cascades, I am now aware of how far I can push the envelope. You can talk yourself out of anything or condition it to succeed in horrible conditions. I am getting old and know there are no illusions - some things you are forced to do just plain suck regardless of if your in shape or not, although that does help.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Like anything else it has to be a combination of both physical and mental durability. You can be the most mentally stable person in the world, cool under pressure, quick thinker and all that jazz but if the body isn’t at a minimum state of readiness you’re not going to be able to execute all your great ideas.
I think one can even argue that PT might be more important because although you can’t always change the way you think you can ALWAYS change your physical fitness (to some degree) with some hard work.
