  • Weather Alert Radios

I know weather alert radios warn of dangerous weather, but will they also alert to other issues such as nuclear or biological attacks? Our local tv stations are offering them at supposedly a good price. Thanks.

Just make sure it's a "NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards "

I just ordered a cheap one from sportsmansguide, it has the crank/dynamo thingy, too. $22 I think... I am not expecting too much, mainly wanted to try out the dynamo, I know it's little power for a lot of effort, but if there is no power source at all, it would prove invaluable... so I am going to test drive this one, if I am happy, I will likely invest in something more rugged down the line. I'll follow-up when it comes in.

Any WX radio is better than none. I prefer the ones with S.A.M.E (Specific Area Message Encoding http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrsame.htm ) so it ONLY goes off when there is a alert for your county.

I have several of the ones above including a few battery powered ones (for camping, hiking, etc.) that work really well...

The idea of a Weather Radio is that it goes off only when there is an immediate threat... or conditions may be likely for one.

Mine is a Midland (unknown model) Its cosmetically different from Zombie's pic, but i bet its similar, got it cheep at Sams or Costco.
Three must haves on a weather radio:
                1) S.A.M.E You dont want to be wakened at 4AM because there is a storm 3 counties away. My arch -nemesis the "flash flood warning" no longer rocks me out of bed either.
                2) External antenna connection (if you live in a spotty coverage area)
                3) Output to an external alarm. (outdoor bell for when you are in the yard, or a flashy light for the hearing impaired)

                    Fellow Survivalists,

My CB Walkie-Talkie not only picks up 40 channels from as far away as 20 miles, but it also can pick up (I think) 4 N.O.A.A. Weather Radio frequencies. The only reason I say "I think" is because I keep it in the truck with my B.O.B. gear and don't have it in front of me. If you can find a CB radio with Weather Radio capability, by all means get it.
