How long will sugar and coffee last? Can I extend the life of coffee by freezing it?

I know sugar will last a very long time as long as kept dry. I am still using sugar from 5 gallon buckets stored about 8 years ago. Coffee, don't know..

I've used 10 yr old sugar. Coffee, if you get the super good stuff in the bag, will last longer in the freezer. I get the cans and tubs that have been vacuum sealed (Maxwell House etc.) and I've used stuff that was several years old. The instant stuff lasts for years too.
Someone on another forum told us that Price Chopper (eastern) has coffee plants for sale in coffee mugs (for gifts) and she has been growing coffee for years. She reccommends it, and has never had any problems; roasts the beans herself at home. She says to keep them in a big planter on wheels and move them around to sunny windows in the winter. I think she hauls her's outside in the summer.

OZ, do you vacuum seal it in smaller bags then store in bucket?

Do you have to have more than one plant to grow?

No, I just dumped the larger bags straight into clean buckets and put the tops on them. :) Flour I do, cornmeal I do..etc, but not sugar.

Do you put any absorbants in the bucket?

No, I've never needed them for sugar. All of the buckets are stored in a dark, dry area, however it wouldn't hurt if you chose to use absorbers in your buckets. :)

Lil Bear, I found this site for you. It doesn't necessarily talk about storing in buckets, but it may answer some questions you have. :)

I don't know if you need more than one plant, I will ask her.
Sugar has an indefinite life, just keep it free of moisture and bugs and it's fine. Because of that, I vacuum seal my sugar bags and just toss them into a large rubbermaid tub. I saw my grandmother keep hers in a huge tin for years, I think it held 50 pounds...she stockpiled during the Depression and WW2.
