So when the SHTF and you have a little down time waiting for food to cook or zombies to knock on your door, what will you do for fun?
Besides the standard deck of cards in your BOB or kit, what else might be neat to have?

Diesel, If one is lucky enough to have luxury time in a SHTF situation, there are a whole world of options for entertainment. If you have enough provisions and few threats to them, it can be like "The House At Pooh Corner" all over again! :)
In addition to the standard pack of playing cards, there are Survival Playing Cards with survival information and Knot Playing Cards with knot-making instructions, each with the same numbers and suits as regular playing cards.

...Just make sure you also take a cue from Sanford & Son's Fred G. Sanford and have a drawer-full of reading glasses to go along with the books. (Now you know what the "G" stands for. :D )
If you have a cheapie knife that you can stand to dull up, ding up, or even lose, you could play mumblety-peg with friends...or even in the carcasses of enemy Zombies.
The Foxfire series of books has a whole bunch of mountain-man crafts you could use to pass the time, such as whittling and carving wooden toys, blacksmithing tools and ornamental items, making moonshine, and as the book puts it: "Other Affairs of Plain Living."
With the carving skills, you could make your own Chess board, Chess pieces, and bust of Caesar and do like Robert Neville in The Omega Man and play yourself in Chess.

I know that this might sound like it's comming from someone that should be in the Special Olympics but even in normal times I have an endless list of things I need to do. Normally I am up at 6am and in bed about midnight. This might be because I am not that energetic or because it's hard to get any one thing done when you live by the weather/season. I like to Think that I am organized but sometimes I am flumexed by simple tasks such as fixing a lamp. I suppose that in general my life is a combination of seasonal tasks interupted by crisis control! So much for my free time!

We could find new uses for things that are not used (in the event of an E.M.P)
books are good to have, i usually keep a few on hand i have not read at all or in awhile. Lots of info and no electricity needed.
board games, checkers, jenga (sp?), monchola, things that dont require alot of pieces.
if your lucky enough to have a telescope, that could be cool.
adding facial hair, horns and such to old Obama signs.

Things to do and keep the kiddos from being bored. Can anyone think of other things besides books, cards, and board games. Here are a few. Marbles, pick up sticks, dominos, jacks. Anyone have other ideas?
Dice games are small and very portable. Yahtzee comes to mind, but you could also make versions of Left-Right-Center. You don't have to gamble, but Craps would be an option.
In the Walgreens in our area there is a small selection of travel games. All small an packable. Barnes & Noble also has a small games section for children.
A small Bible would certainly be in order. Maybe other prayer books. I keep a small SAS Survival Guide that has a wealth of information.
One of our truly lost skills; USE YOUR IMAGINATION!!! True story. We were having a family dinner in a restaurant out of town. We had small children in the group. As you would expect, the children eventually got bored. One of the older children took all of the sugar and sweetener packs out of a couple of bowls and laid them out on the table. The children all had pennies as markers, and a penny to flip. If the toss came up heads you moved forward one space. If it came up tails you moved forward two spaces. First one to the end wins. They were entertained for half an hour.

Crayons. Good for the kids. A million things they can do with them. If push comes to shove you can steal them from the kids, and use them as candles; either by themselves or melt them into the shape of your choice.
