  • Daily Routine

OK, this has probably been covered somewhere else, but it's an idea of how one could go about deciding what will be needed when TSHTF.

Alarm clock wakes me up in the morning. Hmmm, do I really need an alarm clock if I have no job to go to? Maybe I do for other things. If so, I better have a battery powered clock, or better yet, one of those old time wind up clocks.

I go get my two cups of coffee. Hmmm, how important will coffee be in the bad times? Do I use my limited storage space and food budget to stockpile coffee, knowing that means less space and money for beans and rice? If space and money are no object, making coffee means using water and heat. How much of my stored water am I willing to use for coffee? How much propane, wood, etc. am I willing to commit to making coffee? Maybe this becomes a luxury item.

Breakfast? Better be thinking about what foods will provide filling, nutritious breakfasts without the need for a lot of water and heat. Remember, water that I commit to making oatmeal with is water that I won't have later for drinking. Heating supplies (see coffee above) that I commit to cooking with are gone once used.

Go to the bathroom. Yep, need TP. Some kind of TP whether it's regular rolls, Sears catalogs or whatever. Better work on that one.

Take a shower. I get the feeling that daily showers will be a luxury in the bad times. What can I do to take a partial bath? How will I rinse off even if I only wash part of my body? Got to start thinking about those things, too. Having a big supply of soap and shampoo will be good, but without a big supply of rinse water they won't help much.

Shave. Something tells me that in the bad times, beards will become more popular as shaving may become a luxury. Remember, shaving takes water, and even a little water to shave with every day starts to add up over time.

Brush teeth. Must have an extra toothbrush or two. And extra toothpaste stored up. Good dental hygiene (for that matter, overall hygiene) will be extremely important to remaining healthy and strong.

Put in contact lenses. Here's an interesting one. I can stock up on extra lenses, cleaner, drops, etc. But if the bad times last for a few years, sooner or later I'm going to run out of all of that. I guess I better have a few extra pairs of glasses around just in case. Getting emergency glasses with cheap, durable frames will help me buy more pairs than if I got the nicer frames which won't matter much in the bad times. Of course, my prescription may change over a period of a few years, but having glasses which are close to what I need will be better than having none at all.

Put on deodorant. Well, maybe I can live without that, although it won't be pleasant.

Get dressed. OK, Most of us can probably get by with the clothes we have, but it's good to consider.

Drive to work. Oh, well, that's gonna change when the TSHTF.

Just a few ideas about things to consider that we do and what we use every day. This certainly doesn't come close to covering everything, but it's maybe a good starting point to think about your own routine.

    cleaning

Be sure to stock up on baking soda. Baking soda can be used to cleanse the body without rinsing, ( two tbls per gallon of water will sanitize and deodorize). Sprinkled on a tooth brush will cleanse the mouth very thoroughly, it will also help sanitize the sink, kitchen counter, cutting boards, and a multitude of other things. I think I'll start a post on what to do with baking soda and bleach.

Nah...then I'd just have to turn the old "hair don't" in for a "hair do." :D

I just recently had lasik done on my eyes. It's well
worth the time and investment. I was back at it taking
care of myself and my 23 critters the same day.

                    No more reaching for glasses.

If you don't want to waste water on showering daily, stock up on baby wipes. they will help you stay a little cleaner.

Bathing will become an issue due to the lack of rinse water necessary. About 12 or so years ago, my father lived with his wife and step-daughter on a small parcel of land. They hauled 1-gallon plastic milk jugs 1 mile (in a truck, of course). Their bathing was a half-gallon of heated water separated into 2 containers. One container was used for soapy water, the other was to rinse.

When they were done with their "bath", the soapy water was used to water plants or clean non-food oriented items. The rinse water was kept to make the next "soapy water" container.

Mostly on post #1 on this has some things to think about. What are we willing to give up for the sake of having the things that we must have to survive? Coffee will be a luxury. So will a lot of other things. It is true we will be giving up many things we are used to having. How many things do you have, eat or drink that you feel you must have now that in a SHTF situation are you going to have to give up? Will you be able to give up the luxtury items you have now. These are good points. Though Big_Saw is funny. But it is the first post Rossa bought up that got my attention. It will make you think about what preps in both food and other things are the most important for survival. It also makes you think about how much water like for coffee and even tea it will take to make these things. Just something to think about. Bathing, well we won't be taking a daily bath any longer so need to have ways to at least keep ourselves clean. And yes baby wipes are not just for babies. Dry shampoo is another one I can think of where water would be an issue. No water required to washing your hair with a dry shampoo. I bought a can of it that I am going to try out just to see how well it does. Though my hair is not oily, I don't know how it will do for people with oily hair. These are things we all need to find out now about.

I want to win the lottery if so here is my wake up call. Playboy bunny comes and open drapes in my 110 story penthouse. She has coffee, printouts of e-mails from people far and wide. She departs to get dressed. Then her and the cook bring in my breakfast. Something different every day.

I get up use exercise bike for 20 minutes then into the shower where bunny #2 is waiting to wash me down. Then to the soak tub (Discovered this in Japan), up dry off and get dressed.

Maid #1 ready in waiting room with additional list of people who want to see me.

I want to win the 655 million Mega jackpot then hit the 315 million power ball. With that much money you have joined the Trump club!!!!!!!

Why would you not want to spend all that money? You cannot take it with you or do you want the government to get the rest?????

                            Just having fun!!!!

Rich, I needed that laugh after what I have gone through. But just to let you know I hold the winning tickets. (I wish). Anyway on that note. I am now off of this forum. You guys have been the best but this forum is no longer the place for me. The attacks are to the point I am not sure if I will be attacked for posting or bringing up older post. I don't need it. Murphy will do it again if I stay on here and I don't want to say something I will regret later.
