  • Recycling for preps

What kind of recycled items can you use to add to your preps?

    For instance, I have

5 gallon buckets w/ lids- got from my local bakery that originally held corn syrup. I've cleaned them out, bought mylar bags, and they are going to be for long term storage of rice and wheat.

2 liter soda bottle- mine are cleaned out, refilled with water. I've heard some people use them to store rice or flour... better than the original bags to keep mice out.

veggie or coffee cans- good ol' hobo stoves. I've used twigs and charcoal with the Cub scouts and just put a pan on top for cooking.

some of our member have made flame throwers- oh, excuse me- I mean, can stoves out of soda/beer cans.

    what else?

Or several months worth of TP, depending on the size of the book.

We have a huge freezer, right now we got 1 elk 2 deer lots of bacon, cheese etc.etc. I fill my old milk gallon jugs with water, freeze them. We can keep about 12 gallons froze right now. In the event of long term power outage the ice just might keep stuff cooled long enuf to can the meat or put in smoker and dehydrate. When its all melted ya got 12 gallons drinking water. Not to mention I am a cheapa$$ I hate buying ice everytime I need to pack a cooler.:D

            Saving things

I'm reaching overload on stashes of newspapers and metal cans (such as soup/coffee/etc cans). Any advice on how much of these items one should keep?

              one more ting for bottles

When storing pasta 2 liter bottles are great for spaghetti, angel hair pasta, linguinni, etc. Just freeze it for 5 days or so to kill the bugs and thier eggs then put in the bottles. It stays dry, bug free, and the bigger vermin cannot get to it. You can use other pastas as well but the long thin ones work best since all you need to do is tip the bottle up and pour it out.

I see alot of talk here about reusing 2 liter bottles for storage and I can see them being very useful. But there's been alot of talk in the news lately about not reusing plastic water bottles because of some of the chemicals breaking down , (especially if left in hot cars,or anywhere with high temps) and possibly causing Cancer . They did say not to refill them with water, but I would think the chemicals would be transfered to anything that you would store in them. I'm no scientist , and it seems like everything here lately somehow causes Cancer, But this may be worth a doing little research before alot of precious supplies, and your loved ones are exposed to this chemical reaction. Just my opinion.

                  Some plastics can be reused

It is true that some plastic water bottles can be toxic, but only SOME. THose that are made of plastic once that has been recycled more than once should not be used for water storage. IF the plastic water bottle has that little triangle made form three arrows that indicates recycled product look underneath the triangle for the word PETE. If it is there then you can use the bottle. PETE means that the plastic has only been used once before. Also if there is NO little triangle then that means the bottle is made form new materials and of course is safe to use for storage.

                  IMPORTANT!!!!!
If the little triangle is there with NO PETE underneath it DO NOT reuse for storage of liquids. You may still use for storage of solids.
