I've seen titles here I didn't know about, so thanks for the suggestions. Btw, looking on Amazon for 'Lights Out' (I see that it's now available in book form--yay!) and the listing there gives lots of 'if you liked this, you might also enjoy...'--type of recommendations that include titles listed here, so could be a resource for additional titles that have come out that are similar.

One I'd add--and I always bring up in terms of disaster lit:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Unthinkable-survives-disaster-strikes/dp/0099525720

Although it's non-fiction, it is still very much a page-turner. It uses a lot of accounts of various types of disasters from 9-11, to air travel disasters, to encounters with muggers, etc. to explore how people react to sudden emergency situations. Along with describing people's reactions, it also gives tips on how to be better prepared for such situations.

    Also non-fiction but also good--

Heart Like Water by Joshua Clark (first-person account of Katrina, it gets a bit tedious after the 1/2 to 2/3 point, but still good).

Zeitoun by Dave Eggers (account of man trying to ride out Katrina--that alone is worth the reading but also: it's an account of a man trying hang on to his business, but swept up by the heavy-handed policing of the post-storm New Orleans and almost lost down a blackhole-like justice/prison/war on terror system for being in the wrong place and being Muslim)

I hope posting this and bumping the thread shakes loose further recommendations.

Well, I have read a few, including Patriots and Survivors, and have many more sitting on the bookshelf patiently waiting their turn. But what I have found to be the best read is Mom's Journal of the Zombie Years over on the Zombie Squad forum. Very entertaining for visual readers, but also goes into great depth with the ins and outs of daily life during the Zombie Apocalypse. It is all based in reality, except the zombies (yet), and all locations are real.

found a new magazine while in sam's club today. these are really good with lots of info: Mother Earth news the original guide to living wisely. this one is on self-reliant living and homesteading. the other one is mother earth news wiser living series, how to grow and preserve your own food. both of these really had a lot of helpful ideas in them.

All of the above. I think I have every book mentioned, or have at least read it. King James Bible is the exception. I read it 5 or 6 times and am still working on it.

Most recent book I've read is ILL WIND by Kevin J. Anderson and Doug Beason. It starts out with a bacteria tailored to eat oil spills and winds up air born eating ..... well you get the drift. Don't want to ruin it for you. Lots of action and a bit of science

I'm somewhat surprised that with my small collection of Apocalypse/survival type books I have most of the ones mentioned in this thread.. Too bad, I was hoping for some good recommendations. :)

I hate to disagree with some of you guys, but I found World War Z to be boring. Interesting concept, several short accounts by survivors after the fact, but meh. Not to say it was poorly written or a bad book, just not my thing.

Patriots has to be mentioned as a must read. Not the best for story line and entertainment, but because it's essentially a survival guide written as a fictional what-if scenario. Very detailed with glossary and index for reference.

As for my favorite, probably the Deep Winter series.

This would be my "best book" to have and keep too. But I'd like to keep my Louie L'Amour collection!

One Second After by William R. Forstchen

It takes place not far from here in an area where we camp frequently. It's a good book - I highly recommend it for anyone wondering what might happen after an EMP burst.
