One Second After by William R. Forstchen
It takes place not far from here in an area where we camp frequently. It's a good book - I highly recommend it for anyone wondering what might happen after an EMP burst."A nation of sheep . . . begets a government of wolves." - Edward R. Murrow

I'm somewhat surprised that with my small collection of Apocalypse/survival type books I have most of the ones mentioned in this thread.. Too bad, I was hoping for some good recommendations. :)
I hate to disagree with some of you guys, but I found World War Z to be boring. Interesting concept, several short accounts by survivors after the fact, but meh. Not to say it was poorly written or a bad book, just not my thing.
Patriots has to be mentioned as a must read. Not the best for story line and entertainment, but because it's essentially a survival guide written as a fictional what-if scenario. Very detailed with glossary and index for reference.
As for my favorite, probably the Deep Winter series.

All of the above. I think I have every book mentioned, or have at least read it. King James Bible is the exception. I read it 5 or 6 times and am still working on it.
Most recent book I've read is ILL WIND by Kevin J. Anderson and Doug Beason. It starts out with a bacteria tailored to eat oil spills and winds up air born eating ..... well you get the drift. Don't want to ruin it for you. Lots of action and a bit of science

found a new magazine while in sam's club today. these are really good with lots of info: Mother Earth news the original guide to living wisely. this one is on self-reliant living and homesteading. the other one is mother earth news wiser living series, how to grow and preserve your own food. both of these really had a lot of helpful ideas in them.

We get the mother earth news magazine whenever we think of it, Walmart carries it.
You're right it has a lot of good stuff in it."Oh, America. I wish I could tell you that this was still America, but I've come to realize that you can't have a country without people. And there are no people here. No, my friends. This is now the United States of Zombieland"
"The constitution does not guarantee our safety, only our liberty!" Robert Steed before congress 3/2013

Well, I have read a few, including Patriots and Survivors, and have many more sitting on the bookshelf patiently waiting their turn. But what I have found to be the best read is Mom's Journal of the Zombie Years over on the Zombie Squad forum. Very entertaining for visual readers, but also goes into great depth with the ins and outs of daily life during the Zombie Apocalypse. It is all based in reality, except the zombies (yet), and all locations are real.
