  • New Bow

My new bow is going to be delivered to my house Monday or Tuesday. I will be shooting the new 2011 Carbon Element for Hoyt this year and I can't wait. I know there are other archers on this forum and all of us will tell you that this is a great skill to have. This year I hunted with my Hoyt Dorado recurve so I bounce back and forth between shooting recurve and compounds. The benefits of traditional bows are you can build and maintain them your self and make the arrows and strings for them, also they are easy to pack. With my compound bows I need a bow press to do any service on them and it is much harder to make strings for them and arrows are almost out of the question. Now the advantage of the compound is speed and kinetic energy. I will post pictures of the new set up plus some of my Dorado. As for game I have taken game big and small like chipmunks, deer, hogs, turkey, fish and a whole bunch more. So I know I can use them to put food on the table.

    Congrats!

I have a friend who paid 10K to go bow-hunting with Ted Nugent last fall (now THAT is extreme to me!). He got a buffalo. 832 lbs of meat dressed out. I didn't have much respect for bows until then.

Have been flirting with a cross bow, but like you say about the compounds, suspect maintenance would be very difficult unless you have about a whole other cross bow for parts.

I did some archery in my younger days, only turned my elbow in one time :p

For bow fishing I like to use my recurve or a compound bow that has a long axle to axle with soft or round cams. When bow fishing I shoot fingers because this allows me to snap shoot and it is more forgiving if I don't make it to full draw. Crossbows are a good choice for hunting but for a SHTF event I would only want a recurve style crossbow like Excalibur. Recurve style crossbows need no special tools to service them.

Thank you for the advice, bows are one thing I have zero experience with.

Bows are formidable weapons, Troy Gentry of Montgomery Gentry country music fame ventured into the wilds of Minnesota and killed a tame, caged bear with a bow .... a considerable feat. Cost him a couple grand I believe.

I took up shooting a bow as an alternative. I'm no expert by any stretch but at one time could routinely from 100 ft. place arrows inside the perimeter of a paper plate .... killed lots of paper plates.
