Gloves...

I do alot of work with my hands and ever since the "mechanics glove" introduction, I have been onboard. These things have been a 'hand saver' and when I don't wear them, I get my hands scraped or poked:o

Most of the big 'tactical gear makers' have all types of whiz/bang cool gloves... and well they work great! But... so do the much cheaper Mechanix Gloves like they sell @ Lowe's and Home Depot. So other than the subdued colors, go with the cheaper ones... They also ALL wear out the same (about 6 months of daily wear) If you are gonna send some to your buddies that are deployed, keep that in mind.

So why am I bringing this up??? Well gloves, make an excellent addition to your BOB. If you screw up your hands, holding stuff hurts. So you may want to be proactive and keep them in pristine condition as long as you can... You may want to get some a little heavier duty ones designed for rappelling if you plan on using that method :cool:

I have since bought some Blue/Black 'Western Safety' gloves through Harbor Freight for $5,they last almost as long as the expensive ones.

+1 on the HB gloves...I get 4 pair for the same price as the Lowe's version (mechanix), and they usually last about 4-6 months at a time, unless I lose 'em or give 'em away. And when I do lose 'em, I don't cry 'cause they didn't cost me $25... ;)

We always carry mechanics gloves in our bags/packs. My pair is is a little less rugged than the Mr.'s. He has so many pair from the military that we have stashed here and there, but I like the fit of the inexpensive Mechanic glove. The ones I have were about $20.00 and they ripped after cutting wood, maybe a week after purchase. I called their customer service number, they sent a new pair! Good items to have handy!

I have a pair of tactical gloves I wear all the time when I'm in the woods. I also carry a pair of heavy leather work gloves for processing wood and such. I keep them attached to my pack all the time. The tactical gloves just wouldn't hold up to heavy work, but do serve their purpose.

I was using leather gloves I've owned for years while doing some extensive digging, 3 weeks worth!
A seam below the thumb in the palm of the glove created a big blister after a week and took 2 weeks to heal. I went bare handed due to the blister and the result was massive calluses that dried and cracked daily becoming infected and painful, there were, of course, splinters and cuts as well as blisters. The enviroment was wet and sandy (abrasive) so there was realy no perfect glove for that situation, I just had to suck it up and use nitroferizone ointment to keep the infection down. A modern $10 padded glove might have been better than leather!

I like the tan leather work gloves. I picked up a three pack for $21.00 at CostCo. Not wearing gloves when harvesting prickly pears is very painful as the small fuzzy thorns get under your skin like fiberglass.

I order the Tilman "drivers gloves" in bulk....they are less than $4.00 per pr....they are a good all around work glove.

I do have a couple pr of nomex flight gloves...and one pr of Firestorm by BlackHawk.

I generally have some of the rubber dipped kevlar for handleing pig sheets of sharp stuff.

and I have one stainless steel chain mail for working up meat.

Once you break in a pair of leather gloves they can't be beat for abrasive work. I've gone through FAR MORE padded cotton gloves. Leather offers far better protection from natures sharp pointy things and handling things around the fire.
