  • Unusual and strange gear in your BOB.

    What unusual or strange gear do you have in your BOB or survival kit. I mean the kind of stuff that no one else would ever think of or might laugh about until you explained to them what it is good for. I don't really have anything too strange myself. I have an 8x8" square of soft leather. It can be used to handle sharp or hot objects, a placemat for small parts, a makeshift knife sheath or handle. I also have an assortment of different size and styles of nails. They can be used as nails of course or turned into arrow and minispear heads, spikes on a throwing stick and booby traps, fishooks or snags etc etc etc.

    All things can be useful and multiuse with a little imagination and proper motivation.

          A can of parafin wax. Lots of things it can be used for. And some 120 grit & 240 grit sandpaper. Sandpaper has alot of uses as well, can be attached to a handle to make it grip better, or to clean up a hatchet or knife blade, it works for alot of stuff. Oh and a small coil of Tie-wire. Tie-wire is great for all kinds of stuff, from making shelters, weapons(attaching a spearhead), its uses are only limited by the persons imagination.

            Do you know if anyone makes a compact fencing pliers. A good man could do a lot with a Leatherman and a fencing pliers.

              Tampons are great for cleaning the barrel of a 12 gauge. Brush the barrel with a good bore solvent, run it through with the tampon, then hit the bore with a light coat of your favorite gun oil.
              Works much better than the old torn up T-shirts and socks. ;)

              I keep a few on hand in my cleaning kit. They can also be used has a quick absorbent field dressing if your med kit is running low.

              Here's a pic..... Just because I like posting pics.

              The 12ga.... It's not just for rabbits anymore.

                    Can you post a picture or give us a description etc. I am very interested in all forms of primitive gear and would like to know how you made yours or where you purchased it and how well does it really work.
                    Thanks;

                      Here is a video making and throwing a bola http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_RD9...eature=related I used lead line weights and 550 cord .... much lighter than the rocks but still effective against my intended target.

                        Thanks OW. Simple to make but it looks like it takes some practice to use properly. I will find out on my next days off.
                        When I was a kid we would make what we called apple slings.
                        You tie a 2' piece of string to the end of a stick and tie a nail to the other end of the string. Put a crab apple on the nail. Swing it around your head then give it a flick of the wrist sending the apple flying like a paintball. We had a few good bruises to explain with this thing.

                          I like to keep a couple cups worth of bird seed on my bag. You may ask why, the reason is to bait birds if need be to kill with sling shot.

                            Yes this is in my BOB... In fact I have several of them... No they are not what you think... These used to be a single serving liquid protein supplement sold at the Ingles food stores where I live. The bottles are vulgar, but they are waterproof and I use them to hold various items....

                            Now please feel free to let fly the hilarious comments.... I am used to them now... My wife has already given me the third degree on this...LOL....
