  • Let's Talk Pants

Wanted to start a thread on technical pants, pants designed to take abuse, repel water, or dry fast, pants meant to protect and last.

Here are a few of my suggestions, if you guys have suggestions and or reviews, real world examples please chime in.

    Pants made from firehose material

    Tough Stuff

Tougher than most but slightly overated

Not meant to be tough, but a cool product for hot enviroments

I like the old standby Carhartt. I have a pair of double front jeans that have lasted me for the past 15 or so years. They keep me dry and unscathed. Same for the jackets.

I honestly don't think that you can wear them out . I wear Carhartt overalls, T shirts, Jackets every day and have never found anything that lasts like the Carhartt brand.......... That kinda sounded like a commercial didn't it.
Every Day , Is A Bonus.

        Ok... Lets talk pants...
Anyone else planning on losing a little weight if the SHTF? I know I am ;)
So if you are hoarding clothes, do you guys factor in this phenomenon of weight loss... lets face it physical activity will likely increase, and the intake of sugar laden foods will decrease.

        Carhartt makes good stuff.

            Pants? Okay, I’ll bite…

Personal preference is for ripstop nylon, preferably in the BDU style; dries fast, lose fitting (can slide on heavy poly-pro under them in the winter) and easily repaired with a simple sewing kit, or you can invest in nylon tape made just for repairing ripstop. Some of the heavy clothes may be durable, but are they really functional? Consider freedom of movement for obstacle negotiation, ease of repair when ripped; do they rub during long, long walks- can you sleep in them; will they dry out while you wear them? Can you run in them? Can you tie the pant ends closed so they will hold air? How much do they weigh- can you carry and extra pair in your BoB?
I own several pairs of Carharts and love them, but they don’t go in the woods with me, well rarely go anyways. Starting to see a lot more civilian hunting clothing made of ripstop, mostly Mossy Oak- picked up some pants last fall at the local GM. Just my opinion here, my two worthless cents.

I totally agree with Long Hunter. My BOP are ripstop nylon in multi-cam. You can blow the ass or the crotch out, but they're hands-down versatile, quick-drying, comfortable and all the pockets are plus. And with a rigger's belt it wouldn't matter how much weight you lost, they'd still fit.

I have always been a big fan of the convertible pant. All the major makers have at least one and I have several pair from Northface that have lasted almost 10 years. Mine have several inches of elastic on each side, so they have been able to grow with my waistline. I went up 2" and they still fit fine, so I think that adds to the versatility. They dry very fast and breath well. Lots of pockets for small items.

5.11 Tactical has some great pants they call FUBAR pants. Not sure why the use that name, since I have had great luck with them. Got them from LA Police Gear for something like $15 and they have held up very well. Nice and light but durable.

BDU's are excellent, insert a set of thin knee pads and u r ready to rumble.

                  BDU.com is an excellent resource

Be ready for action with our wide variety of BDU pants, coats, patrol caps, shirts and shorts from industry-leading brands such as Propper and TRU-SPEC.

5.11 and BDU's all the way. Carhartt is ok if you are working in them and dont want the wear and tear but they are kinda hard to move in and when they get wet they weigh like 20lbs

So the 5.11 are good pants? Which ones to go with? Looks like there are options such as 65/35 Poly/Cotton Ripstop, 65/35 Poly/Cotton Twill, Tactical TacLite Pro, TDU TackLite Pro, Cargo Pants....

I must say that i wear the BDUs almost everyday and love them I also wear just plain old warngler jeans . the last for ever with me . I have a pair of jeans that i had for the past five years. I wear them at least twice a week and they are washed everytime i wear them. carharts are great but weight is a prolem for me I so wear them to work in right with my jeans they may outlast my jeans but are hareder to move in. The bdus can be adjusted to fit you ,so weight lose isn't a problem . The plus to bdus is that you can get them in almost any color that you may desire.

My thoughts exactly! We live in the area of a North Face outlet. I LOVE their pants! We picked up some "convertable" pants a few weeks back. Since Im a girl, they unzip to shorts, or button up for capris. I paid 22 bucks for them. Grey. Black. Green.. I plan on getting a few more pairs! Their really water resistant.. Im impressed!

I have some cheep ($19) nylon pants with cargo pockets, wear like iron, but I recently upgraded to Tru-Spec 24-7 Series with a strech waistband. The cargo pockets have AR mag pouches inside so you can tote 4 mags. there are knife and cell phone pockets double knees that take knee pads. ripstop/teflon 65/35
8 colors including Multicam for $38.00
PS I love my Carhartts but they last 2 years max.
