  • New solar powered flashlight

I bought a new solar powered flashlight while out on the road. Believe it or not, I found it at a kwicky mart here in New Mexico. I will get a photo or two when I get back home and give a report on how well it works. It has an LED light bulb, and so far has worked pretty darn good. Best part? $10.85 after taxes.

I really put this light to the test last night. We had a small incident. The light had been sitting on the dashboard of the truck since I left. I performed above expectations. I found it is both water and oil proof. It was dropped in a grease slick over salty brine water, and held up VERY well, and even cleaned up to be as good as new. The light stayed lit for a cumulative time of about 3 hours, and did not dim.

Thought I would toss you a photo. Unfortuanatly, there are no markings at all, no country of origin or any name on this light. It was sitting on the shelf with a price sticker of $10.00. I will try to find some more of them.

appreciate the pics, any thread is worthless without them! :) Sounds like a tough light, how do you think it would fair against be dropped on the ground etc? Did you drop the light in the oil by accident?

          Great report, thanks!

Hand crank flashlights go back to WW2 (the Germans had em).
I first heard of these lights/radios coming from South Africa but all of the lights I have seen were marked 'China'.
Harbor Frieght has a crank powered "spotlight" for $20.00 as well as crank powered AM/FM radios but thier product's quality is very spoty and thier customer service on returns has never made me happy.

Rusty does this light have a standard type bulb or an LED unit?

This is the radio I own. One word of caution, NEVER TAKE THEM APART TO SEE HOW THEY WORK. The spring in them is strong enough, and wound tight enough to cut your head off. I tried to take one apart to see if I could "improve" the design. I cut my arm, broke a lamp and punched a hole in the wall when the spring uncoiled.

LED. I do have one complaint. The sprectrum of the bulb is too blue.

My apologies. I meant to post this string in the "Gear" section. Not sure what I was (not) thinking when it ended up in the shelter section.

No, this flashlight would not make good shelter, but you could use it in the tent to make shadow puppets.

That almost makes me want to try and take it apart now just to see that in action.
