One piece of gear I recommend for everyone is the rubberized tarp. They come in different sizes and colors and can be found everywhere. I prefer the silver colored tarps because they are more durable. I roll some para cord and a few bungies in an 8x10 and tie it on my field pack. Lager ones are in my vehicle and home.
Some uses:
Emergency cover for storm damaged roofs
Numerous types of shelters
Ground cloth
Sleeping bag
Did I say shelter
Drag bag
wind breaker or
rain coat
emergency litter
fish trap
Don't forget shelter
privacy screen (camping)
wind screne
solar still
basin to collect rain water
wash tub for clothes, babys or you
root cellar
concealment
Make shift sled
sein
portalet
last but not least: SHELTER
If it gets torn up:
chaps
pouches
scabbard
