you can have a REAL gun in other types of holsters
I was impressed by the Sig P938 as I hoped I would be. In 2009 I reviewed the P238 .380 ACP and THAT is a great gun. The P938 is even better. This is anoth...

You have obviously never humped a rucksack for any distance with a pocket pistol in your pocket!

Depending on the type of backpack used and how the hip belt is both designed one could have serious trouble accessing a pocket pistol.
Even if it was physical unencumbered by the hip belt the weight and location of the pack itself might throw off the draw stroke.
In the field when using a pack I like to use a high mounted drop leg holster.
Here's my old Safariland 3004 as an example of what I'm talking about. Up until recently and after my state went back to Constitutional Carry I pocket carried a S&W 442 Pro (no internal lock) everyday in either jeans or cargo shorts. Thing was so light weight I'd almost forget it was there. And yes I'd draw and shoot from pocket carry at the range I went to. Currently I don't have one as I was presented with a trade offer I couldn't refuse and I'll be in search of another this fall.
So I pack a Glock 26 either Appendix Inside Waist Band or pocket carry with the appropriate holster.
(Will up load another image when my Mickey Mouse ISP let's me.)

This is very true regarding backpacks.

Some packs have options for holsters on the hip belt. Another choice is a chest rig like Hill people gear and using a molle holster on it. You can use a drop-leg (thigh) holster. If you go the thigh holster route, I'd recommend removing the top leg strap - if there are two of them, and then shortening the length of the "drop" so it is just low enough to clear the hip pad on the pack and is easy to draw. This makes it simply a lower belt gun vs a thigh rig.

I am generally carrying a rifle when I'm wearing a pack (where allowed), so CCW isn't a prime consideration. I'd rather have the option of faster transitions from rifle to handgun.

I agree I normally rig the thigh holster to ride as high up as possible and still clear easily.

My older internal frame Lowe Loco pack has a hip belt that a holster can either thread on, clip on with ALICE keepers or even attach vis the old GI wire handers like the leather 1911 holsters have.
That 3004 has elastic scuba webbing instead of a plain nylon web strap so it's not as binding to the leg. and the belt loop/leg drop is velcro adjustable so it can ride pretty high and even loop over most hip belts or loop through some of the adjustment webbing on some.
