How many people have fishing gear in their preps? Hubby used to go deep sea fishing a lot and was in many tournaments. So for deep sea we still have all that fishing gear. We are now looking into getting more fresh water gear as we have many lakes and such that are fresh water. I was looking at some of that gear a while back and still have my old bamboo fishing rod. That thing is very old as I used it many years ago a lot but not in the past 10 years. It is still in great shape.

I have never been a fisherman. Nobody in my family fished, and truthfully, I don't know if I have the patience. When I have done it, I get bored very quickly. I do keep fishing supplies in my BOB. I think I could do some hobo fishing if I really had to. Is there a good kit on the market that some of the true fisherman here would recommend? I have seen the YoYo things, but wonder if they really work, or is it just a gimmick?

        Looking for good suggestions.

          Country,
For survival fishing, I'd recommend nothing close to hook and line fishing. Small fishing kits are fine for SERE type situations but even in SERE training we were taught to improvise nets, traps and to know the local poisons (Rotenone producing plants) to acquire fish in survival situations. For prepping you can purchase or build gill nets, cast nets, fish traps and trot lines as well as learn how to use bank lines, Yoyo automatic fishing reels or pole spring lines. Just like traps and snares they will be working for you even when your not there (except cast nets). Hook and line fishing is something you do for enjoyment, not food production. Just my opinion.

DITTO.........100% spot-on accurate post. I live at the mouth of a super fish river (Trout, Salmon mostly). But there are Harbor Seals, and other large predators (Bears) that are very editable that congregate to enjoy easy feeding at the mouth of the river. (Just don't eat the seal liver).
One day you eat the chicken.....next day the left-over chicken.....next five days you eat chicken feathers, head and feet.

I bought several fishing kits that each have 101 pcs. of fishing equipment as well as several wallet size fishing hooks you can put in your wallet or bug out bag. the first one has the artificial bate, bobbers, hooks and swivels For both of these you do need to buy fishing line to go with them. I got these mainly to add to my bartering supplies that I have been trying to build on since hubby and I can't do a lot of things now like we used to, bartering for us will be a needed thing. We already have a place in mind to go to for that as we do not want to be anywhere near our home to do this. That is not a good idea to trade and barter at your house. I am also getting ready to make more fire starters that will go into plastic bags tor bartering as well. I don't know what our needs will be after a SHTF situation but at least we will have things to barter with if that need ever arises.

To go fishing from a stream or river one thing to remember. Fish have eyes and can see you standing or siting on the edge so make your cast by or in front of trees or shrubs along the bed. It takes patience . You need to be able to read the water flow. Where is it slack where is the bends, where is it deep.

Read about the local fish and how to get them. A little knowledge can go a long way to filling that pot.

That is so true. I used to fish a lot but haven't done so in a good long time now. There is a place in back of neighborhood that I can go fishing my grandson discovered. He has already been fishing there a couple of times. So I am going to start going there to do some fishing. If I am lucky, I will be able to get hubby out of house and fishing again. Though he can't deep sea fish anymore, I think he can handle fishing off a small pere.
