ok so I have read so many great ideas and I have a general idea of what I need for my packs, but I'd like to hear what else you guys have to say. Any links or pictures would be great!

also could you please explain what the different bags stand for? BOB I know is bug out bag, also how many bags should I have? (I live in an apt currently if that helps)

so far I know we need and would like more feedback on:
medical stuff (but would love a detailed list)
flashlights (what are some good crank ones?)
food (best suggestions I CANT eat sugar, which can sometimes be an issue) should i vacuum seal? buy in packages ect?
    dental floss
    vodka
    fire starters
matches/lighters ect (what do you recommend?)
what about toiletries like a toothbrush ect?
    Toilet paper
    hand towels
    my carry weapon
    ammo?

what else am I forgetting? what should we carry where? any suggestions for a 4 year olds bug out bag? I want to put his little portable dvd player, a movie or 2 and some toys in it, seems trivial, but he's still a little young and sometimes spongebob comes in handy....

I LOVE the ideas on here you are all so put together and I'm new so please share your knowledge.

    thanks a ton :)

BOB= Bug out bag. A bag which is to designed to grab and go to give you basic levels of comfort, neccessary items, and gear to get you out of harms way. Can be very simple or complex.

GHB=Get Home Bag. A bag which has enough supplies and gear to safely get you back home via foot (worst case scenario).

Stranded Bag= A bag which has enough gear to 'shelter in place' in case you can not return home for a short amount of time. For example, snowed in at work, you are forced to evacuate your home temporarily, etc.

INCH=I'm Never Coming Home Bag. This is the stuff you would take with you if you had to leave your home permenantly and could never return... Or had to leave for an extended amount of time and don't expect your possessions to be there when you get back. Think along the lines of gold & silver coins, highly portable valuable items, etc. in addition to your standard items.

Most of these bags share MANY common items and the 3 bags I have listed first... are the same bag for me.

I encourage you to dig up kenno's bob post as imho it is one of the best setups on this forum I have seen for light, fast and git-r-done travelling :)

I really like the 'Smith's' line of sharpeners. Got a place for coarse and fine sharpening. They are really small, useful and quick to put a working edge on a blade :) A good Arkansas sharpening stone is good as well, but you gotta know what you are doing :)

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Zombie Axe has an excellent grasp of bags. I saw his layout on another site and on this one not too long ago, so heed his advice well.

How do I go about doing that?

Thank you very much I was getting confused because I didn't know all the abbreviations!

Also I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who worries about zombies... no lie when I tell you that it's a serious concern of mine.

Also I LOVE your quote "someday someone may kill you with your own gun ect..." It's our house motto now.

              Very simple kit...

Need to redo my list as I have upgraded my BOB/GHB so look for that ONE day :)

              Glad we could help :)

For the kids, think about something like hard candy or sweets as it make take their mind off of the the bad things that may be happening... make sure it is something that will hold up well to heat and cold... as well as something that will not melt and run into the other stuff in the bag.

The quote IIRC is one of Clint Smiths of Thunder Ranch... lots of good quotes!!!
