  • pumping water from a creek - SHTF style

I've reviewed a few technologies for this, but I have a creek that runs year 'round and is about 1/4 a mile from my home. I am probably 30' elevated from it, and I'd like to use it as a water source.

I've look at 'ram pumps' and that isn't viable for my setup.

    I'm considering something like this:

running off of a horizontal water wheel.

    Thoughts?

    The creek:

Whatever you have decide to do for a pump or even if its carrying water by hand, you're a lucky man to have such a good resource that close.

Don't know if you would get enough HP to run that pump....I'd look for a smaller pump...gear box and paddle wheel set up....going to a large holding tank.

Even then you may not have enough power to run it up that high.

You could take the pump you are looking at and run it off a gas motor....run it for 15 mins and you'd nave enough water for a few days in a tank....15 mins = 2k gallons.....need a big tank though.

Is 5 ½ HP the Max this pump will handle and not void the warranty.

Great post, thanks for sharing the pics beautiful spread. You can only try..a water wheel is part of my plans as well for energy and pumping they have been used for hundreds of years..

It's just about having the right flow, speed and getting your wheel sized right for effective gearing

The first thing would be to determine if the pump is even able to create the lift you need, and how much power it would require to turn the pump to deliver what you need. I'm sure there's a water wheel calculator somewhere online???

In the readers digest back to basics book there is a whole section on water wheels.

I'm not sure actually, but that would be my guess.

Based on this, and my rough estimation, there is not enough horsepower in the creek to overcome my net head.
                          :(

Maybe something like this would work. It pumped waters about 2 miles at 90 to 120 psi
                            Here is the powerplant.

I believe he's wanting it to be hydro powered.. it should be doable somehow
