  • Made my first purchase

bought a couple of #10 cans of meat. Not a big purchase, but I was glad to be able to get started with long-term food storage. I'm looking at other canned meat, superpails of grains, cans of cheese, milk, butter, veggies....

Little by little I'll be building up my food storage, come early spring I'll start my garden and learn canning and dehydrating fruits and veggies.

Eventually, I'd like to learn to hunt and prepare and can and store my own caught meat..... but this was a start for this city-born girl.

Look at the Armour brand dried beef. It is pretty good, albeit VERY salty. I even found 1/4 lb sealed bags with a 7 year shelf life. I have found it palatable, and very reasonably priced.

Good Job on the food storage!

We store dehydrated hamburger to use in our hamburger helper, tacos, spaghetti, chilli, etc. We still buy the meal kits but have been making up our own 'mixes' to see how they taste. So store the meats, but also store the things with them to make a great meal! Of course we should be able to get beef locally, but sometimes you gotta look at 'what if' I cannot???

I tolerate spam (the meat not the email) well. Canned ham, canned chicken breasts and canned tuna are your good basics to stock up on.

Canned foods like Chef Boyardee, Soups, canned vegetables, fruits and other things you like should be stocked up on. Date all cans (sharpies work well) and use the old stuff, while putting the new stuff at the back of your shelves. Don't make the big mistake of storing food you don't normally eat, ALL of your food storage should be integrated into your diet. The only exceptions should be items like freeze dried foods that last for decades but when they get close to their expiration dates, eat them. Food storage that is never eaten is a WASTE.

Need a can of corn, buy 2 and stash the extra. Make a rule for every can of food I use, I will put 2 in the pantry until you get to your target goal!
Never underestimate the power of spices! Store salt, it is cheap and unless you can make it yourself store ALOT. Spices make bland food come alive! Also don't forget hot sauce and other condiments. If you are a ketchup freak and your are cooking up some wieners they may not be as good without that stuff in your pantry.

Lots more stuff to think about... but don't worry... most preppers never get done prepping.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

And Pepper!! You can eat some pretty lousy rancid food with plenty of pepper. There was a reason pre-refrigerated Europe valued pepper above all other spices. Not to say you will have to eat less then fresh foods, but one never knows.
