This weekend I am taking a class on raising heritage and ancient breeds of fowl. With these birds they are both layers and roasters that reproduce on their own and raise their own chicks. I have raised chickens before but always from chicks that I buy from farms or mail order and every year I have to order more chicks ( to replace the ones we eat ). The idea behind this is that these birds are self sustaining. I won't need incubators or any other modern technology to keep my flock going, just water, food and a coop. For those of you in the ME. NH. MA. and VT area this class is offered multiple times each year in NH. I will let you all know how it goes. I know the class covers every thing you need to know about breed selection, coop design, raising and care, killing, cleaning and cooking. So every thing you need to know from egg to pot.
