I belong to a Backpacking site and there are a couple of gals there that have put out a great cookbook that use freezerbags. you combine all your ingredients in the bag and put it in a cozy and pour in the hot water. I have gotten many great meals from this and I'd like to pass along some of their ideas.
Brosia, have you ever heard of this?

I think it was posted on this site, but cant seem to find it. There was a warning about doing this. Appears chemicals from these bags will taint the food when heated up.

That was the talk for a while when this all first started but the gals I'm talking about have done the research and if you use the heavy ones it's alright. I'll see if I can find the link and post for you.
I know I've done it and many others. No problems that i know of. Good lookin' out tho.

We'll start with Breakfast foods. We all need to fuel up for the day so these are simple, easy and yummy! No muss no fuss!
Oatmeal, rice, couscous, bulgur, instant cream of wheat and quinoa flakes are all interchangeable for instant type breakfasts. Switch up the varieties of nuts or dried fruits and the possiblities are endless. Add more or less sugar or Honey and powdered milk to suit your own taste. Keeping in mind most of these recipes are for 1 serving. These are great for on the run/road cooking.
Our first breakfast recipe is:
Peaches and Cream Oatmeal (serves 1)
1packet plain instant oatmeal
3 tablespoons of dried peaches,
chopped, 1 tsp. of cinnamon,
2 tbs of powdered milk,
1/8 tsp of ground nutmeg,
1 tbp. of brown sugar.
combine all this in a freezer bag and when you get where you're going or you're in your spot, add 2/3 cup of near boiling water to this let it sit for about a minute and eat.
Cherry Orange Pecan Oatmeal (serves1)
1 packet of instant oatmeal
2 packets of True Orange ( your choice what you use here)
2tbs of chopped pecans
1 tbs of dried cherries, chopped
1/4 tsp of ground cinnamon
1tbs of powdered milk
once again combine all in a freezer bag, except carrying the pecans separately. (not sure why)
add 2/3 cup of near boiling water and top with pecans.
Now, I want to interject here that you need a cozy for your bags. anything will do, a hat, make a little bag out of felt, just as long as you have it contained as the freezer bag will get hot. I have experienced this for you so you don't have to.
Okay, I will. It will take a while to get them in. There are tons. I'll try to pick the most popular ones. Ones that I think most people are likely to use. They're so easy and smart! Seems a little silly not to make use of this idea that's for sure.

1/4 c. instant rice
2 tbs. dried blueberries
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. powdered milk
1 tsp. brown sugar
Add enough water to cover rice, stir, set aside for 5 min. or until rice is tender. This is one of my very favorites. This is a great breakfast on the trail!
This is another of my faves.
Sunrise Bowl
1/2 c. instant cornmeal
1/2 c. dried apples, chopped
2 tbs. dried cranberries
2 tbs. chopped pecans
1tbs. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 sing serving packet of butter (optional of course)
carry pecans separately
do not add the cornmeal until you add the water and then gradually. Stir and cover and wait about 5 min. top with pecans.
Apple Breakfast Wrap
This can be made ahead of time or on the go.
1 tortilla
1/4 c. dried apples, chopped
2 tbs. peanut butter
1 single serving packet of honey
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Spread peanut butter on the tortilla. drizzle with the honey, then sprinkle on the cinnamon. tope with the apples and roll and eat.
I know this doesn't require the freezerbag cooking but it's just a great on the go munch!
